Chimney Starter

I used to use a chimney starter and finally had it fairly perfected (half chimney and fluid, inch of crumpled newspaper, finish the chimney with coal and fluid, paper underneath, light from top first then bottom)

but recently decided to go back to the pyramid on the grate.

I could kind of go either way but will probably stick more with on the grate.

I also belong to the "light then prep club". I do not wait for them to completely ash over either.   I usually am using baskets for indirect so I pour a little barely lit charcoal in one basket, then the other and keep going back and forth. Your less lit charcoal is on the bottom with the lit on top and it burns down. Works great!

Fan is cheaper at lowes/target etc.
