I use my hands. I can understand if you need some kind of equipment though.

You must grill a lot to be able to pick up lit coals by hand :)

Yeah, it's an Arizona thing...coals get hot, but nothing like the car door handle in June.

I use these. I got the whole set when I picked up a grill. It's Weber branded and I believe the tongs were made for coal use. Weird design being that all 3 pieces are all metal.

Dude, those tongs are awesome.

LOL.  I have two pairs of these, a longer pair and a shorter pair.  They are always hanging from my SSP and rarely get cleaned.  They are great for moving coals around and suck for food.  If anyone is noticing my dirty tongs, I'll stick them through the grate and into the coals to "sterilize" them.

Lol, I thought I was the only one that sterilized my tongs that way.

I've had these tongs for probably 30+ years.  Don't know where I got them, but they have stayed with me through two moves and three kettle upgrades. They have always been my dedicated charcoal tongs. The original handles rotted off a couple of years ago so my neighbor turned me some new custom wood handles.  When replacing the wood handles, I found the metal parts are three pieces, not one.  The top loop is round stock and the two individual tong arms are square stock. I think they were actually designed for charcoal, not food. Anyone else ever seen ones like these?

I remember tongs like those growing up. They were great for turning brats and dogs.

Haven't used it yet since I just got it the other day but I picked up a char broil ash clean out tool from Walmart on clearance for $2.50 for this exact purpose. It has a scoop side and a rake on the back.

Previously I was just using cheap tongs and will probably continue to use them from time to time.
