Title: What do you use for charcoal tongs?
Post by: Uncle Al on March 05, 2017, 09:35:11 AM
I have been using my cooking tongs and then cleaning them before handling the food but I think I'm ready for something dedicated just for charcoal. What are you using to move the coals around?

I just use an old pair of tong that has wooden handles. Think it came with one of those grilling kits with a spatula and corn ears etc.

Yup. That's what I use. They sucked for food usage, then became great coal movers.

I was in Target last night and that are stocking them in store this year. I was tempted but decided to wait until I got a set of dedicated tongs for the coal. Hmm... decisions.

Oxo good grips or the unbranded equivalent. You can find them on Amazon for ~$12 or at the restaurant supply stores for ~$8.

I use an old ice fishing skimmer. You can move a few, or a lot. Plus it has a pretty long handle(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170306/b73ed94129a94bd3a047c4d878a446ca.jpg)

You must grill a lot to be able to pick up lit coals by hand :)

LOL.  I have two pairs of these, a longer pair and a shorter pair.  They are always hanging from my SSP and rarely get cleaned.  They are great for moving coals around and suck for food.  If anyone is noticing my dirty tongs, I'll stick them through the grate and into the coals to "sterilize" them.

Then I have some rubber tipped tongs I use on the grill for more delicate cooks like brats and chicken where I am being careful not to break the skin.  I think one is from target and the three matching ones I got on amazon for under $15.  That set is actually pretty nice as the ends are a little bigger than usual and are fairly sturdy.  The matching set are "Culinary Couture"

Gross!  lol.

They do hang nicely from the end of my SSP though.

I got a decent set of Kingsford branded grill tools at the wholesale club a few years back, the tongs are all that remain, and they are great for moving coal.

Yeah the price jumped after I bought a set. They arrived today. For the $6.73 I paid for them they are really nice.

I use a pair of those as my charcoal tongs as well. Funny thing is, I've had those tongs longer than I've had any Weber (and they've always been charcoal tongs)

I use these. I got the whole set when I picked up a grill. It's Weber branded and I believe the tongs were made for coal use. Weird design being that all 3 pieces are all metal.

I've had these tongs for probably 30+ years.  Don't know where I got them, but they have stayed with me through two moves and three kettle upgrades. They have always been my dedicated charcoal tongs. The original handles rotted off a couple of years ago so my neighbor turned me some new custom wood handles.  When replacing the wood handles, I found the metal parts are three pieces, not one.  The top loop is round stock and the two individual tong arms are square stock. I think they were actually designed for charcoal, not food. Anyone else ever seen ones like these?

Haven't used it yet since I just got it the other day but I picked up a char broil ash clean out tool from Walmart on clearance for $2.50 for this exact purpose. It has a scoop side and a rake on the back.

https://www.charbroil.com/accessories/cleaning-maintenance-tools/cleanout-tool

Previously I was just using cheap tongs and will probably continue to use them from time to time.
