~Any Slide Aside Lid Bale Mods??~
« on: December 24, 2016, 02:31:46 PM »
I've read posts where some people are swapping out old lid bales for a new style?

What model/make are we talking about? What is different with the new style bale?

I cook on: Backwoods Gater, Lang 36, Hunsaker Smokers, Pellet Pro 22" WSM, BGE's, WSM's, Cajun Bandits, PK Grills, Drum Smokers, Genesis Silver C, Weber Q's, Cookshack 008, Little Chief, La Caja China #2, Lodge Sportsman...oh yeah! Weber Kettles! Kamado restoration and pit modification hack!

The new performer bale is a little larger and allows the lid to open fully vertical:

Since the other thread is about a SS performer, I thought I would make a thread about the 2015 Lid Bale on my 13 Performer Platinum.

I went to True Value during my lunch break to take some measurements of the bowl holes before buying the parts from Weber.

While I was there an older gentleman was purchasing a black performer premium to compliment his BGE. He mentioned he wished they came in green. As luck would have it, I had a like new spare green bowl and lid that I just cleaned and pulled off of my performer. I asked if he was willing to trade. He thought about it and said yes, as long as I put his performer together for him. I was smiling ear to ear. I mentioned that the Lid Bale on the new performers are different than the one on my green kettle and don't open as wide. He was fine with it. I took the rest of the day off and assembled his grill.

Once I got home I assembled the Lid Bale on my 13 platinum.

The new rollers are longer

Proper installation of Lid Bale

Note that the Lid Bale wire is not perfectly horizontal anymore.

While I was at it, I installed the metal table I bought a few weeks ago.

New(extremely thin) cover.

I'm happy with the results. Thank you to @ClubChapin for letting us know it fits.

Crap. I just ordered a lid bale and didn't know about this. Is the new style what comes on the master touch now as well?  What is the part number of the new bale?  I assume it will work on any kettles not just performers.

Jury is still out on this one, but it's a $.96 mod that won't break the bank for anyone calculating the cost per briq on those holiday Kingsford sales!!

Pretty cool to see the retrofit mod to older performers.

As an alternative, I am still a big fan of this mod:

Extremely cheap, totally functional, moves the lid completely out of the way, and you can still use your existing performer cover.

Thanks, good ideas @Winz @swamprb

On the above mod, could you use the lid hook that's on the lid or do performer lids not have hooks?

That's correct, performer and M/T lids do not have hooks.

I liked Winz 's idea, but went through the lid vent. And mounted this piece

Here's a pic of the top of the vent

Hanging

I'm left handed, so any lid bail position would be in my way...
