I am really wanting to try to pick up a WSM but not sure which size would be best. I do t usually cook for too many people but when I get comfortable smoking I may cook for more people. How much can you cook in the 14 and 18.5 WSM's?  14s are $99 at Walmart right now so was thinking about that or could just wait for a CL pick up one day not sure. CL is dry as far as Webers go for a long time in my area.  Thanks in advance for any info given

I think the 18.5" is the most versatile and a good place to start.

I only have the 18.5" WSMs.

I can do 4 or 5 pork butts, 6-12 racks of ribs (depending on method) a couple of briskets or a bunch of thighs or wings. Very versatile cookers.
I've got Webers. 10 - WSMs, 5 - 22.5" kettles, 2 - 18.5" kettle, 2 - SJS, 2 - SJP, 4 - WGA, 1 vintage Coolie Pan

I sold all my 18" WSM's and doubt if I'd ever get another.

22'' Bullets all the way!
I cook on: Backwoods Gater, Lang 36, Hunsaker Smokers, Pellet Pro 22" WSM, BGE's, WSM's, Cajun Bandits, PK Grills, Drum Smokers, Genesis Silver C, Weber Q's, Cookshack 008, Little Chief, La Caja China #2, Lodge Sportsman...oh yeah! Weber Kettles! Kamado restoration and pit modification hack!

So glad I got the 22. I have so much space. Never have to trim anything to fit.

IMO the 14.5" WSM is not worth it unless you want the portability. A kettle can smoke anything that the 14.5" can with much more space to use. The 18.5" WSM can cook a ton of food, but the 22.5" is superior for laying out large slabs of meat like a whole fise, pack brisket or ribs. Good luck with your choice.

Thanks all for the replies. Just wondering if a 18.5 would fit a 10-12 shoulder?  Looks like I need to start looking at the 22 WSM and see if I can find on CL.

10-12lb butt? No problem whatsoever on an 18".  10-12 butts? Better be looking for something bigger than a 22".
Still need a 22" yellow

If you are sure that you will only be cooking for small groups/family cooking, the 18.5 is more than enough.

I have a 22 and love it, I can really load it up when I want.

But on those weekends when I am just doing one butt or a small quantity, it's almost easier to use the 26 instead.

I've had an 18 and currently have a 22.  Pros and cons for both but I think the 18 would have suited most of my needs besides large briskets.

Buy the 14 while you wait for something to pop up on Craigslist.  Then after using the Craigslist  18 or 22 you can decide if you want to keep or sell the 14.

Get a 26" kettle if you don't have one already.

I think I would cook mainly for 6-8 people.  It seems like the 18 maybe my best bet for now.

Patience my young padawon. Took a year and a half of searching cl, several times a day, to find my first color. Longer than that for my first WSM.

It's going to require patience to find a 22 WSM or 26 kettle on CL if you don't live in a major metro area.
