if it has a patent number, it's from the 70s

Troy...I'm pretty sure my yellow Ranger has a patent number, but we know this grill is from 1965.

Some from the mid 60's (like the Ranger) also had patent numbers.

Mine doesn't have any writing. :(

I got that problem too Shaun. Haha, sweet red head!

if the patent number is 3538906, then the grill is from the 70s

if the patent number is something different, share it here and i'll figure it out :)

while the ranger came out in 65, it doesn't really mean all the rangers in existence were made in 65.

Troy I see what your saying, and I just didn't think the Yellow Ranger was made into the 70's. I know the Red Ranger came out in 1973. But going by the patent numbers you are correct. The patent number 3538906 was filed Nov 22 of 1968 and issued Nov 10 of 1970. So by those dates any grills manufactured between Nov 22 of 1968 and Nov 10 of 1970 should have patent pending on the vent and all grills with patent number 3538906 should of been made after 1970.

I believe patent number 3538906 was for the switch to screwless leg sockets, I know my Ranger definitely had screws holding the legs on (which would be 1960's) but I am sure that was just the design of the grill.

Anyone can look up a patent #, it's easy. Go here:  http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/patimg.htm and plug in the number. You'll get the original patent drawings with the associated dates. etc. I have 30 or so of these patents from a former life at Black & Decker, and learned a lot about the USPTO - not all of it interesting or fun. Here's a pic of one page from the one mentioned below, and Smokin Hutch is right, it's related to the leg attachment.

Nice Craig!  Hey Troy can you make a special section on the home page with a picture of every vent from all the grills?  Come on it would be cool!
