We just need to pick a date that everyone thinks they can make...I think anytime from the 2nd week in June should be safe from any possibilities of colder weather.

First three Saturday's in June would work for me.

I'd be up for bringing something from the smoker.

Ok,  I weighted the old and new lids and found the following:

New 2013
14.5-1lbs 5oz
18.5-4lbs 4oz
22.5-6lbs 4oz
26.5-12lbs 5oz

Old various dates
14.5 -2lbs red wood handle "K"
18.5-5lbs Woodale custom 1956ish
22.5-7lbs 5oz Imperial blue with metal handle
22.5-7lbs 5oz red lid with wood handle
26.6-10lbs 5oz Brown Warrior wood handle

Interesting..... So the new 26er is heavier than the old 26er and its slightly larger

The new 26 has the heat sheld and a themometer mounted in it, that accounts for some of the increase.

from lifting paper as a printer for forty years, I can tell differences pretty easily & was at least semi-sure this would play out like this......


I don't know how easy it is for you to do this, but I have several "M" dates that seem lighter than even the newest ones; ever notice the mid-years being different ?

I did clean the older lids, no soot or carbon build up in them.  One difference is the 2013 were all black, the older models were all colored.  When Weber puts a color other than black it is always a second coat.  But I can't imagine the second coat would weigh even an ounce.

I am marginally suprised this thread ended as quietly as it did.

The weight of my ~1969 avacado (22) is noticeably heavier than my 1995 (green) or 1999(red) Mastertouch lids.  And those MT's include thermo hardware, and do not have massive porcelain chips that the avacado does.  The old lid also seemed to retain heat longer, although that is anecdotal.

My daughter was helping me cook on them yesterday, and she noted the old one was heavier independantly.

Did ed ever get the micrometer out to measure the actual lid thickness?

Funny you mention this.  I think the lids on my '58 and '60 Wood Dales are noticeably heavier than my 69/70 Patent Pendings.  I noticed this on Saturday while performing inspections.
