Smokey Joe Platinum Score
« on: March 15, 2013, 07:33:08 PM »
Picked up a Smokey Joe Platinum DR  (2006) at the Habitat store for $10.00.

Could not pass it up.  Thinking about picking up a Pro Q Stacker to build a WSM Clone.

Here's a couple pics.

How bout the legs.  This POS would fall over in a 1 mph wind.

Fix the legs and cleaned up a bit.  Don't think this Weber has been used much.

Still need to work on the inside a bit.

Cheers and Beers,
Tracy

Yep they were on backwards.  One side of each vent cover on the bowl was also bent. Probably from falling over since the legs were bass ackwards.  :o

So here's a couple shots of how it looks with an inverted pro q  stacker.  They say it fits perfectly.  I can buy on for about $58.00 shipped.

You can see some of the extra hardware from swapping the grate and handles.  I think this cooker also has two cooking grates.

It seems weird that the bottom of the bowl faded too. Did they make a grey 18 in 76-78 ?

It's a funny thing about the older blacks. They fade to gray and sometimes uneven. I think it depends on where it was stored and how the sun hit it. If it was on cement the sun reflects up and fades them, where others were stored in areas where just the lid  faded like on grass. I had a really old one years ago that was stored in a garage that was still very black. I have some really old smokey joes and some are faded and some are still really black because they were kept in the garage. My oldest one is a 1961 and it's really black. The seller said it was always in his carport storage.

My Pro Q Stacker does not fit in my SJP as nice as I had hoped. Its too snug!
I cut a few notches in it to try and make it a better fit. That didn't do too much.
Use at your own risk. For $58 you can build a Mini WSM and still have change!  8)

thats good to know. where did you get your stacker ?  there is ebay seller who sells them for $70 or make an offer.  i know is a surplus seller.  same guy in AZ that sells them for $58.00 shipped.  so i am guessing it is so snug that it is a struggle to get it out ?  how does it cook ? i already have a WSM mini (which i love ) .

I never cooked on it as it is not a finished project. But I did get it from the guy in AZ. I beleive he is also the eBay seller. Just make him an offer and see if he accepts. I wanted to shop around and find a large tamale or steamer pot. I just haven't had the time.
I built my mini and it works fantastic and uses very little fuel.. 8)

I picked up a jumbo joe a while back that had the legs on backwards and the bowl dampers were missing. The guy that assembled it must be a genius.
You can't always get what you want....but if you try sometimes you get what you need
