Hardwood and embers
« on: March 01, 2013, 07:54:29 PM »
The last couple cooks that I've used cowboy lump, it shoots tons of embers all over the place, like mini explosions, what would be causing this? I normally use K blue but have been using the cowboy lump a lot more, but this bag is very sparky compared to others.

cowboy is really hit or miss, and the last 8 or so bags i've had were all miss.

the wood was clearly scrapwood. plywood and 1x1 and 1x2. there were even some rocks.

i think the popping has to do with a lot of factors (mostly moisture and air) - i have noticed that some brands pop more than others.

get yourself some royal oak lump.

If you have a Woodman's grocery near by, give their Grove Lump a try.

All lump tends to spark. That's the nature of the beast.
kettles, smokers...

I live near a woodmans, I always buy my coshell from there. I didn't notice any lump though, I'll have to watch for it.

I don't touch that Mesquite never, too many embers.  It's a shame too, because I see it at the Latino markets at 15 bucks for like a 40lb bag.

I know most eggers hate it, but man does it give a nice citrus flavor off that goes so well wit mexican food. Especially fish tacos! Please reconsider!  ;)

That would be the chemicals from the scrap wood!

I use Lazzari, no scraps. I have never used cowboy. The El Mexicano is also pure mesquite.

I'm almost out of cowboy. I'll take a break from it and try something new. I've not found (or have looked for yet) Royal Oak Lump.  :-\

Don't get me wrong, I like the flavor.  It's just that I can't handle the sparks while I'm cooking.  It's more annoying than anything.  I can deal with it while lighting up, but not when I'm flipping a burger.

Just today, I saw a 7# bag of Mexicano Mesquite at the market for $2.77!!    :(

I may give it a second chance, the price just can't be beat.

Yeah, the price has gone up. I picked up a few bags of El Mexicano at $1.77 a couple years back for AJ and I. Lots sparks, but at least no rocks. Take a ride out to Lazzari and get the oak they sell. The #40 bags are really reasonable at the factory and you won't find it anywhere else.

I only have storage for one maybe two of those 40lb bags max.  I have no garage.   To make it worth the drive I'd have to pick up at least 10 or more.
