1981 C Code Red. Now with new Handles!
« on: February 20, 2016, 11:13:41 AM »
With the weather warming up early here in Nebraska and the rest of the Midwest, it was time to yank a grill out of hibernation and slap on a new set of handles I got from Brian recently, thanks again Brian!

1981 C code red 22.5 a grail I picked up last summer. Still need to clean up below the waist but she serves as an excellent cooker.

Original handles.... This  '81 is a "single screwer" I have a black and dark blue 81
C codes that are the double rivet style. These were the "The One The Only" stamped version.

This has to be one of the brighter red kettles I own. A close second is my 79 A code. Here it is last summer with the dark blue.

Posing with the 79 A code.

Next to my 1970 PAT PENDING. Reds got much brighter and more vibrant by the early 80s.

Finally got to put on the new handles today. These are the replicas of the original "one the only" with the two rivet shape bottom and later single screw top. Finished in a medium walnut. Got a fresh set of double rivet for the black C code. More on that one later. Kettle appears much darker here as I was heating it up for lunch as I snapped these photos.

Crooked C's. Now I need to check my blue and black ones to see if the C's were caddywampus..

Thanks for looking!

Very nice. Love the handles.

On a side note... Thanks for posting the 81' blue. I was wondering if there were blues that year. Now I'm on a grail search.
Still need a 22” yellow

@Craig   Very nice red.  I see that double rivet blue too!  Still have only seen two double rivet bowl handle blues.  Yours is is much better condition than the other.

Those handles looks great on there!
I didn't know you could combine the lower part of the double rivet handles with the single screws. I do like the feel of the double rivets handles.

@Craig , just curious why that's a grail? Birth year? Family had one? Awesome backstory? Any way the slice it, all of them are beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Why a Grail? Well, a few reasons. 1. 1981 was the first year of the all wood handle (3WD) kettles so these could have come with either or both styles of wood handle (single screw and/or two rivet) 2. An 81 still guarantees daisy vents (my first preference) 3. One of the more vibrant reds Weber made. 4. C code. C is my first initial. 81 is not my birth year, that is 1978. I do have a dark blue and a chocolate from 78.. 5. My goal is to have the complete color selection from 1981 including the C code WSM. I've got 81 C codes already in Red, Black, Dark blue and a first year WSM. Just need a Dark Green and a Chocolate Brown.

There is something really cool about the rolled edge twist ash pan. Do we know exactly what years they were used?

They started about halfway through 1979 and made them until 1986.
