I think I have a solution for the 2015 lid hook
« on: August 27, 2015, 05:31:18 PM »
I have been eyeing a new grill lately but after reading the improvements for 2016 thread I'm hesitant.  For 2015 Weber moved the lid hook 90° from the handle making it very awkward to hook the lid on the side of the bowl.  This new configuration seems to be universally disliked.  To see if I could live with it I went to Lowes today to test is out myself.  I could not find a comfortable way to hook the lid on a cold grill in the store.

So I looked under the lid to see what it would take to make things right and then it hit me.  The 2015 handle is a bolt on (tolerate it or hate it  :-\) making for a convenient way to add a new hook without modifying the lid.  If I take a piece of flat steel, drill two holes to match up with the handle's bolt pattern, bend a hook and then bend to the shape of the lid then I should have a hook positioned back in the familiar to use position.  Since it is bolt on you could install it either pointing left or right depending on which side of the bowl you want to hang it on.  Better yet use a longer piece of steel and make a hook on both ends so you can hang the lid on either side of the bowl.  With this idea I think I can be happy with a 2015 model.  Now if that Copper OTG will just go on sale at Lowes ;)

Great idea, love it!  Having parts bolt on does make mods and repairs a bit easier.  As for bolts coming loose, try loctite.

I swear, by all that is Cookable, that I will NOT purchase any NEW Weber grill until they respond to and implement at least 33 1/3 % of the items on @Troy 's improvements list.

Hummmmmm, I can't recall ever buying a NEW Weber grill  ...  I wonder what that's like ???????               SJ

@Uncle Al  What a clever ingenious idea  ...  you need to patent that idea and then send Weber Corporate a resume.           SJ

I like that idea.

I have a Happy Cooker lid for my UDS, and it is set up the same way.  I believe it was OEM for the HC lid.  Works great.

If there is any interest I do not mind looking into getting a batch made up.  But hey, I've gotta get me one of those lids that need fixing first  :)
