Now why didn't they finish the job make a snake-basket? They had the inner ring right there, not to mention the grease-catcher - all they needed was an outer ring. Heck, you wouldn't even need the charcoal grate.

Between this and the instruction sheet up above, it even sort of makes sense now...... :o

Must have been an earlier attempt to lure the Texans into the Weber fold w/ smoking....?

...but @1buckie didn't invent the snake until many years later...

Thanks, but guys like Hell Fire Grill & others were doing that before me.....I was close to figuring it out all on my own, here at the Kettle Orphanage and then saw some various threads on it....

Hella cool find. That's basically how I set up a snake with a water pan,  I would have thought.
If it breathes, we can cook it!

Cool find. I'm skeptical about the utility - how much water it holds, how long that water lasts, and the amount of cooking space that is truly indirect available - but still, very neat old accessory.

Looks like it could be used as a paella pan.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch
