Gas Assist
« on: May 21, 2015, 03:29:03 AM »
Hello Everyone.

My wife does not like using a chimmey starter with news paper / charcoal. I love it, she does not. So I mentioned to her that Weber has a grill, performer, that allows her to start the coals with LP gas. Well, we have 2 weber grills, a blue one, ( mine ), and a black one, both new. I want to mount my blue one on a table, put LP gas starter into the kettle to light the charcoal for her ( and my daughter ).

Some basic questions. And thank you for taking the time to answer them.

1. What regulator / hose do I use?
2. Does anyone have a template I can download, to mark off the holes for drilling ?

Thank you much in advance.

Citislicker.

Weber starter cubes might be worth trying (cleaner, easier alternative to paper), but here are two discussions about adding gas assist.

It's possible but it's tricky. The drilling needs to be done properly and the parts arent cheap.

I hemmed and hawed over doing the same until i got my hands on a gas assist performer.

Instead of drilling your kettle maybe consider some alternatives:

1. Turkey fryer or side burner on gas grill.

$50 and no drilling

2. Lots of guys swear by mapp or propane hand torches.

3. Gas Assist performers on craigslist pop up and can be found cheap if you are patient.

The Weber Starter cubes are better then the news paper so maybe thats a short term solution.

I just saw an ad for a single-burner camp stove for like $20 but can't find it now. Most of them are twin burners like this, http://www.basspro.com/Bass-Pro-Shops-Two-Burner-Propane-Stove/product/10209543/

But have another conversation with the wife first and discover the objection. If its newspaper ash (I hate that) then Weber FireStarter Lighting Cubes will make her day and they are cheap.

You haven't yet added your location to your name; some areas seem plentiful with used Performers and parts are easy to find if necessary.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

citi - You are in an enviable position!  Your wife is basically begging you to buy another grill.  Do not damage the fine kettles you own.  No, instead, begin searching Craigslit for a used performer.  I prefer the older SS models, which you can pick up for about $100.  And they come in many fun colors!  The newer ones are also excellent.  Begin your search today, and buy your wife the grill of her dreams ;)
