Basement Chicken on the 18er
« on: April 29, 2015, 11:22:39 PM »
I've had a vertical roaster for a while and it was calling my name. I don't usually put a beer can in it.

Setting up the charcoal - 1/2 mini chimney on top of some leftover charcoal and chicken in a foil drip/heat shield

It got a chunk of hickory and a rotation about half way through

Marinated some tomato halves in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, basil, and salt and pepper

Got some really good color

Had some store bought porcini gnocchi and steamed broccoli with garlic cream sauce (http://www.food.com/recipe/garlic-parmesan-cream-sauce-over-pasta-240474), the tomatoes, and chicken.

That's a great looking plate there!
Why not use that vortex sitting down there?

I'd say you got color!

Ooh, big fan of the 18 here. I like using just enough machine and no more. And these simple cookies can't be beat.

Why not use that vortex sitting down there?

My question would be why use it for a basic indirect cook that might crowd the chicken on an 18?
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

If it fit in there and you still could get enough charcoal in there you wouldn't have to rotate the chicken.  The chicken has great color and the rest looks great!

18 OTG's are awesome, they should have priced those lower than they did

22 Silver + $50 = 22 OTG
18 Silver + $50 = 18 OTG  I think if the 18 OTG came in @ $110 they would have sold more.
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

@WNC @addicted-to-smoke @1911Ron  I have the medium vortex and it's a pretty tight fit in the 18", especially wide side up and trying to pour charcoal around the outside - it would have worked great on the 22". I'd like to get a small vortex at some point but before that I've got my eyes on some GrillGrates and maybe a wok first.

That's a fine looking yardbird!  And a great cook-up.  The 18s are amazing.

This cook reminds me of one my many experiments:

@MacEggs thanks for that I read your link and I do think the foil slowed down the cooking of the lower half of the bird. I prefer a clean kettle but think in this one it might work a little better without the foil. And every once in a while a little grease to seal the One Touch system doesn't really hurt!

That color is incredible!  Did you rub it down with any olive oil or did you get that result on a naked bird??

@Grizz I just patted the bird dry with paper towels and salted it pretty heavily. The hickory chunk was about as big as a baseball so it smoked the whole duration of the cook.
