Looky What The Mailman Brought Today Boys
« on: March 20, 2015, 04:54:48 PM »
604 and I have been exchanging care packages for 7 months now. I got another one my way today guys. Wow.

First is a mid 70's cookbook...love the vintage advice....and a euro charcoal scoop:

Inside the scoop wrapped in tissue were these:

604 made these. The top ones are Maple and the bottom are Walnut. I took one of each and after doing test patches on the backsides, treated them with John Boos Mystery Oil, a "combination of pure mineral oil and raw linseed oil". I have it for a Maple cutting board. The Walnut got a little American Walnut stain but it did not appreciably change the look....darkened it a smidge but that is it. I am gonna hit the Maple with some more oil tomorrow to deepen the hue and then put some Satin Spar on in a few days.

Thanks Matt....this is very cool of you. I have already pointed out to the wife that these, "have my name on them", several times.

... 604 made these ...

Yo Matt, you been holding' out on us, cuz? :)

That's awesome right there.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

You're very welcome Hoss - I'm glad you like them and can't wait to see them on a kettle 8)

Both the oil and stain look great so far, very nice job!

lol - not at all! These are from the first batch to "leave the shop" so to speak (aka my garage)... certainly not as flawless as a Zav', but I'm really happy with how they came out and have learned a new skill or two along the way.  :)

The wife is going nuts from me saying, "but they have my name on them". I love it. I treated the other 2 handles and added some more of that oil to the Maple ones. Gotta say I am really grooving on the light colour of the Maple.

I'm just making sure, these handles have become such a part of my life.  It's an interesting thing, I feel like I am creating pieces of art for people in a tiny scale.  Some of the handles have very personal stories behind them.  I knew how I felt the first time I put the handles on my own grills.  I want everyone to feel that same way.   I have honed all my processes down to a science.  I do that so I can keep my costs as low as possible so I can give everyone a great deal and continue giving them a great deal.  I suppose I get a little protective.  I try so hard to make sure everyone gets what they want and they are very happy when they get it.  It becomes do personal when making this stuff.  Doing these handles is a job no doubt.  But I do love seeing the handles on people's grills.  The wood always makes grills look so much better....my goal is to get wood handles on everyone's grills!

Not trying to step on any toes here and I think I've been one of the biggest proponents of Zav handles right since day one...

I just made some handles for a few friends, this is not commercial venture or anything like that...

Everyone can settle down and return to their leisurely paced Saturday ;D
