       Expanded metal or get a pizza pan with holes in it.

Great idea... would not be that hard to make something like it.
Not sure how much better it would be than expanded metal. And it would reduce air flow = cooler fire

@Z - what was your offer?

I just use another grate turned 90 degrees.  I'm worred that the plate will restrict airflow & temperature too much

Dollar tree! Seriously, they have a $1 round grilling tray. I bought one this summer. It would definitely fit into the bottom of your kettle.

I don't think you need to worry. It's not that big of a deal.  I don't think there are any dollar trees around here...good thing I ordered!
