Griddle Ideas
« on: August 12, 2014, 03:44:31 AM »
So Hogsy's new griddle score got me thinking.....

Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions for a round steel/stainless/cast iron plate that would perform similarly?  Id like to find something with a larger diameter (>20") to lay directly on the cooking grate.  Ive been searching some online metal fabricators and keep coming up blank.

I have a plate of a cheap gas grill. I wired it to an old grate and it works beautifully. I'll try and dig up some pictures later on.

This guy on eBay makes custom laser cut grates. They are expensive though. You might be able to just buy a blank grate. Or maybe put a small WKC logo on it.

I like the way these look or you could use a Q griddle or a CI grate from a Weber Gasser..   8)

This a Weber Griddle 6560...

There is also the older D shaped plate. All the gasser conversions would be useless if you want to cook up some eggs. Unless the solid plate of the 300 Q fits inside a kettle.

Come to think of it, I should try that seeing as I have a 300 at home.

Try calling up some of those rolled steel smoker fabricators. They have flat endcaps- maybe they can sell you a 20" diameter one. Remember, steel is cheap shipping is not.

I was gifted with some cast iron Fajita platters, that sat unused, so I cut the handle off them and they work well without taking up a lot of grill space.

Don't have any pics of them but nobody has mentioned using a Paella pan. I have 2 of them, a 20" carbon steel and an 18" enameled coated pan that fit my 22's.

I cook on: Backwoods Gater, Lang 36, Hunsaker Smokers, Pellet Pro 22" WSM, BGE's, WSM's, Cajun Bandits, PK Grills, Drum Smokers, Genesis Silver C, Weber Q's, Cookshack 008, Little Chief, La Caja China #2, Lodge Sportsman...oh yeah! Weber Kettles! Kamado restoration and pit modification hack!

Lodge makes handle-less sizzle plates in various sizes and configurations.  http://www.lodgemfg.com/seasoned-cast-iron/serving-griddles

As for a griddle, I use a Lodge Reversible Pro Grid Iron Griddle:  http://www.lodgemfg.com/seasoned-cast-iron/grill-pans-and-griddles/reversible-pro-grid-iron-griddle-LPGI3
Weighs a ton and I can put directly on top of the charcoal baskets if I need to get it really hot.
