Photos of wheels
« on: February 22, 2014, 11:21:02 AM »
Do we have photos of the various types of wheels and the years they were used? Might be kinda fun to see, and might be a useful aid in determining age of some of our kettles.

Some of these are not the best examples but its what was readily available.  I dont have specific years but will try to provide my best guess at a date range.  WKC historians may be able to provide a more specific year(s).  Here goes:

6" Wheels (starting from upper left to right)
Metal hub, rubber tread, thick painted whitewalls = used through at least 1968
Plastic hub, rubber tread, thick painted whitewalls (missing in photo) = used through at least 1973
Plastic hub and tread, thin painted whitewalls = mid to late 1970s
Plastic hub, tread and whitewall = from at least 1979 to current

8" Wheels
Metal hub, rubber tread, thick painted whitewall = used through at least 1968
Plastic hub, lawnmower type rubber tread, thick painted whitewall (not pictured) = early to mid 1970s
Plastic hub, tread and whitewall = from at least 1979 to?
Plastic hub, tread and whitewall = from at least ? to ?
Plastic hub, tread with grey cover = from at least ? to ?

This could make an interesting poster (albeit a very short one!).

Even though I prefer the metals I'm really drawn to the 8" plastic one on the lower left hand corner. I like the look of it.

It's the low profile tread!

I picked up a freebie black EZ basket case yesterday to use as parts. This is the first time I have seen wheels like this. My other EZ has the normal plastic whitewalls.

I have wheels like that on my EZ model as well.  Well, they WERE on my EZ kettle.  Currently, they are holding up my yellow MBH  ;D

hatch, those wheels are similar to the two piece white walls. The main difference is there are holes for the white piece to pop into but they also have the weber engraving inside. I wonder if Weber just modified the existing tool mold to save money.

Does any one know if you can just buy the snap in white wall?  I have a few that the wheels are in decent shape, but the sun has destroyed the white wall

I think these might be the 8" wheels you are missing.

They are on my 26" Patent Pending Brownie.

Thank you!  Now I am closing in on the date of the grill I found beside the curb last fall.  I had been stored in a garage for the last several years judging by the dust and cobwebs.

For the older ones I make a sticker that replaces the whitewall.  If you need one let me know....It makes it real easy to replace.  Sometimes paint gets weird and it's hard to mask. The sticker you just apply and done.
