How many briquettes?
« on: April 23, 2014, 09:59:54 AM »
I'm doing ABT's on the performer tonight and was wondering how many Kingsford briquettes I should start out with to hit around 250* on my performer?  I figured I'd put the fresh ones on top of the used KB/RO lump combo that is currently left in the baskets from last nights burger cook.  Thoughts?

I start off a little hot, like this:

And it seems to seal them up pretty quickly, then add in some wood, you can pinch the vents to go lower so your cheese, etc. doesn't melt out......

I use dampened shread & the temp goes down when the wood goes on, but if you're using chip or chunk, the heat may go up when the wood goes on, hence maybe pinch the vents......

That pack might run a good two hours plus, starting @ 300+ & rolling along at 250 for the remainder of the cook......

 Happy 'Turding !!!!!

I ended up starting with 12. It worked out nicely. Temp got as high as 300 but leveled out at 260 at grate level. There were only a few turds left and a friend asked if he could take them home for his lunch tomorrow. Sent him home with some pulled pork too. I'm stuffed!

I did throw a couple of handfuls of apple chips on there. Could have been a little more smokey for my liking, but everyone else raved about them.
