This year marks the 5th year that we have been operational for the WKC.
This also marks the 5th time that the WKC has organized a meetup in Chicago, with Chicago being the birthplace of the Weber grill it is the perfect spot for these meetups.
While there are other great meetups throughout the country (and abroad) this is the grand daddy of them all.
In past meetups we have had members come in from all around the North American continent to attend.
On Saturday, July 8th the WKC will be hosting another historic event with kettles of all kinds, from the rare and pristine to the used and abused that will never die.
The event will be hosted again by Brian aka
@zavod44 in Elgin, Illinois.
Prizes include weber covers, gourmet cooking grates, 6405 shish kabob set and other items.
I have a special request for this year, there is always an abundance of meat on these grills and meat is great, but special kudos to those who can cook appetizers and side dishes. You are more than welcome to cook meat if that is your specialty but sides and aps would be a huge bonus.
Here is the link to the good times that were had at previous Chicago meetups.

Yes, especially given the fact that you told her and didn't ask.
Hotel suggestions near the venue would be greatly appreciated.

My wife went on the interwebs and found something about 20 miles south of Elgin, we did that because we are going to an event on Friday night that is about 50 miles south of Elgin.
It all depends on where you want to be and where you are coming in from.
That said country inn suites is nice and has decent breakfast

I wasn't planning to attend as I work this day and didn't have a kettle to bring worthy of showing.
Now I have a nice MT kettle to show and (PTO) vacation time off work. So count me in to attend this meet.
Edit on 6/7/17: sorry I won't be able to make it after all. Family is planing an extended vacation on August and I need these extra days off for this event. Darn work always getting in the way of fun. Oh well, Maybe next year.

As I sit here at my PC, in cloudy Eugene, I can't help but feel a little isolated from ALL of the fun at ALL of the meet ups going on around. But that's OK, since I have my girls and they have me. At least until I recently learned that "items available that will only ever be available at this years C*(&*^o meet up". WtF ???
In all seriousness, enjoy your meetUPs and get togethers and please, please take many pics to share later on. ;D

@Bob BQFajitas.....marinate thin strips of flank / flap meat....only takes a few minutes to slice up....peppers (I like sweet bells, not green), sweet onion, maybe something extra like pineapple, just to throw 'em a curve.....you only need 3-4 elements to get a good tasting mix....more is fine but simple is just fine too....
Stir the meat, set aside, stir the vegs....add a little sauce of choice, add meat back in to finish...serve w/ torts.......real good, pretty quick & tastes great.... 8)

6 days until the event, so excited
We are really looking forward to the meetup. I've been pulling out a few favorite recipes for sides to make and bring. I make a Mexican bean salad that's always well received at potlucks as well as an orzo salad that's a cool twist on a typical pasta salad. I'm looking for something I can infuse a bit of smoke into so I can at least have one thing that hit the grill :) I'll have a few different things- I've never been to a party where I hadn't brought too much food, why change stuff up now? Lol

Arrrgh...I have to work that weekend. Bad luck for me.
OK, I'm in for sure. Off the fence so to speak. That would be two of us (Cindy too.)
I need to study the menu and see if there are any gaps I can fill. I'm not sure what to prepare. Suggestions are welcome.
Thanks!
Edit: I don't see pork ribs on the menu. I've got those down on my 27" kettle. Would that fit in with the rest of the food? (I'd have to get to Brian's place and set up about 5 hours ahead of serving time but wouldn't have to stay. They seem to do well enough without me mucking about. ;) What is our target for serving time anyway?

Honeybun just texted me that they are in dire need of umpires Sat. So we will probably get there right at 2pm as it's a 2.5 hr drive. Not a deal breaker for us since I'm not actually grilling and will have my sides made ahead. They games usually go till 11, then he will zip home, shower quick and we will hit the road. Just letting y'all know!!

I will bringing mine with for a new handle. Poor thing had this plastic one on it when it was rescued. We will find a good one for you.👍

@Kneab - Thanks!!!! Your Cado looks funny with a plastic handle. Pretty sure I have not seen that before!
Hit that nylon glass handle with 0000 steel wool and some blue Dawn. It will whiten right back up. I actually like those handles the best of all the non wood ones.

What an amazing day today. So much passion and camaraderie flowing through the crowd.
It was incredibly refreshing and inspiring to see so much energy coming together at this scale.
HUGE thanks to all who planned and organized this EPIC event. It was the 5th anniversary meetup and you all made it amazing.
Zavod44 - dude. You are a saint, and your wife is an angel. You go way above and beyond. The special handles, the special logo, the banners, the grills, the hauling. You are teh man. Thank you for committing so many full freaking days/weeks to this.
Craig - your commitment is incredible. Not just driving from Nebraska with a vehicle full of grills either. Pre meetup setup, post meetup teardown, coordinating, organizing, You are a pro and the event wouldn't have been as great without your presence, let alone all the work you put into it.
Lightningboldtz - you really pull it all together man. Your energy and coordinating took this day to a whole new level. You commit so much, on so many levels. You nail all the details that make it all extra special. The prize donations, the setup, the leadership.
I love that your whole family gets involved. Thanks to you, as well as Rose and family.
Jeff k, your life is hectic right now, yet you still managed to bring a huge load of collectibles and set up a beautiful display. You and Jean are magical. Thank you for everything you both do.
all you that cooked and brought food, thank you so much for feeding the crowd. Everything was excellent.
I can't name everyone because my memory is shit :)

Anyone within an 8 hours drive of this event should go, it is a good time, this is my 3rd year in a row and starting to be a yearly must.
Thanks to Brian @zavod44 for opening his house again. Great host. 100 beautiful kettles filled up his yard this year. AWESOME. To all the statesmen, a huge THANK YOU for making this a GREAT yearly event. To everyone who showed up, WOW...thanks for the fantastic food and camaraderie. I was just wondering the same thing.........
I made a last minute decision to attend the gathering and drop off a grill and I'm glad I did. The people were great and the display of grills was fantastic.
Thanks to all who set this up and to the chefs who cooked. The ribs were excellent. I'd like to especially thank Brian,
@zavod44 who hosted this again.
I can appreciate all the hard work he put in behind the scenes to host a huge party with a lot of setup beforehand and tear-down afterward. Also, thanks for the Handle! See you next year!

It looks like it was a beautiful day for the get together. Hopefully I will make it to the next one.
@LightningBoldtz You sure do have that kettle looking nice! Kid stuff kept me in town last weekend (happy campers returning home after two weeks). I hope to make it up there next year.

It was a great time!! Lots of fun, just at 100 kettles. Harris92 we need some help breaking that kettle record next year. It was great seeing and meeting new faces and seeing familiar faces again. Thanks again to Zavod44 for hosting again and to lightningboldtz for coordinating the prizes, Troy for getting some great footage, thanks to everyone that cooked (the food was to die for)!! Amazing! And thanks to all that brought some SWEET GRILLS to set up for display or to cook on. This is the highlight of my summer for sure. Can't wait until next year!

@LightningBoldtz You sure do have that kettle looking nice! Kid stuff kept me in town last weekend (happy campers returning home after two weeks). I hope to make it up there next year.

@harris92 your finger prints are all over this day, even though you are not present, your old Green MBH made a showing at the bottom of this pic.

How can we get you to make the trip next year?
I will put an Alabama wrestling move on @harris92 and throw him in my truck like a kettle for next year LOL

The drone pics are amazing. I think one of those photos should be on the cover of next years calendar!
The American flag and stars spray painted on the lawn are a neat touch. I spy a black kettle in the neighbor's back yard (7th photo) and what looks like a E210 gasser.

Wow! Wonder if there is a world record for most kettles in one place. If not, this would be it!

Thanks to all who made this happen!

I also thought they were joking about having drone pics.
@LightningBoldtz Jeff, the drone pics are just FABULOUS. The view from above is just crazy good. Definitely calendar material. Again, thanks for all your hard work putting this great event together. 8)
These drone pics would also make great high res wallpapers.
@LightningBoldtz anyway these could be posted to flickr or high res somewhere?
Here is my album for these pics, I am not sure how high res we can make them

I am glad the drone pics are a hit, this was one of the main events this year that I thought of when I purchased it a few months back.
Sorry this is a little late, but I just needed to thank everyone who attended, not just this year but any of the last five years. The people make this meet up great. The grills were just off the chart this year. It was so awesome what everyone bought.
The event has gotten bigger and I thank everyone one who helped me out, it can't happen without you, @Craig, @Troy, @No.1agent, @lightningboltz and my neighbor Pete. Huge thank you.
I hope this meet up just keeps growing and getting better, it's a great time.
Lastly I just have to mention for those of you who may not know, the special stickers and the Chicago banner, that is the Chicago flag. We thought it was fitting for this special occasion. I'm hoping Troy will have shirts made with this logo.....
Again, thank you, thank you, thank you....

I wasn't able to attend but thank you
@zavod44 (and everyone else) for putting the meetup together. Looked like an amazing time.
Hey I wanted to mention that @kneab did a remarkable restoration on a pretty rare grill that was at the meet up. I had scored a legit steel wheel 18" brownie a few years back. It languished in my yard for a long time. Maybe a month ago I traded it to Kneab for an old Wood Dale. Well he took it and really gave it the respect it deserved. There aren't too many steel wheel brownies out there and this needed serious fixing up. The legs were caddywampus, and a leg was busted off with the socket fused on the leg. It was a total rust bucket...
There may be more of these out there, I know @harris has one, but they are hard to find, a rare bored indeed. kneab did a remarkable job... Not sure if he did a post on it's restoration but I got to see it in person and it was really nice to see it like that. To me that is what it's all about, taking a rare piece that was for all intents and purposes a piece of trash and getting it back to near factory condition....I hope someone took a pic and can post it here....

Wow! Nice cleanup and good looking brownie.

Guess you and Peach will have to join us next year, eh
@MrHoss?
Having seen that steel wheel 18 brownie in person BOTH before and after, I can say, what an incredible job done on that grill. I was foolish and passed on it last year but I can see it landed in great hands! Nice work on that 18!
