One-Touch Cleaning Kit
« on: March 20, 2014, 04:34:58 PM »
I have a OTG (code DR) and a OTS (code DR).

The OTG is rough but has what looks like a stainless steel damper kit that is still in good shape.
It uses the "key" system to lock the petals as seen in this catalog cut...
http://www.ereplacementparts.com/onetouch-cleaning-kit-p-1477272.html

The OTS is aluminized steel and uses the thumb screw.
The OTS is pretty good shape and I've moved the OTG ash pan system to the OTS.
I would also like to have the stainless steel damper system in the OTS.

I have two questions...

1) Is there any reason that the damper systems can't be swapped ?

2) How does the "keyed" damper system as seen in my link above, come apart ?
I can feel the control rod hit a "stop" or "shoulder" when I pull on it.
It doesn't feel like it wants to twist if that's what is needed to disengage the shoulder.

Jam a screwdriver inbetween the h washer and the handle rod. Twist the screwdriver, then twist the handle away from the screwdriver. It'll come out super easy.

OK, thanks.
I'll give that a try tomorrow.

sometimes, sometimes not.

Sometimes they slide back together and click in without much effort.
Other times the handle/rod won't even fit in the motherflipping holes.

on my J code converted to OTG converted to cajun bandit smoker I ended up skipping one of the extra washers AND filing the tip of the handle/rod a bit to make it easier to put into the holes.

^^^^ that takes care of #2, but what about this:

Lawerence....come back......

isn't this the same issue that comes up from time to time?

You can't just cut an H into the ashbar. Long story short, the ashbar doesnt rotate with the sweeper handle but the H washer does. I have a part drawn up that will secure the H handle to the sweep but allows the bar to rotate. Im waiting for the parts to come in from Mikeinctown to finalize tolerances. See my DIY thread for more info.

I believe that dampers can be swapped between kettles of the same size. It's when you start mixing and matching bowls, dampers, and ash catchers where you start runnin into compatibility issues. OP, you just want to have ss dampers yes but not add an ash catcher to kettle #2? Either way, we can help.

Yep, already done ^^^

Those stainless blades and control arm look nice too and should move over as well.

Gotta go slow and easy with that thumbscrew....looks like trouble.

I'll hit it with penetrating oil and maybe some heat.

Yeah, I first thought it was a trying to fit an H style clip into a hex bolt ashpan....apples & oranges, unless Gummi's reinvented the wheel.....which I know he can do!!!!!

there's some good info on de-rusting also, but if it just don't work the new SS ones seem to clean & resist crud better.....

I'm still not totally sold on the new ones, the metal bends easier & can be a problem w/ lump charcoal

DD, don't fret. make the swop. You may have to purchase an new H style sweep in the end, NBD. Guaranteed, if that 7409 sweep has seen action and elements, it may not come out. That thumb screw is soft metal. I have twisted off a few with channel locks, with little effort.

If they are gunked up, a bit of WD-40 or simiilar helps a lot.

Also, the new OT parts are pretty cheap. Not even sure they are making them out of SS anymore.. It appears that all of them are aluminum or cheap galvanized parts.

Save your SS ones for the nicer grills!  8)
