This is a first. I opened up a fresh bag of Weber briquettes and saw they were mouldy. Has anyone else seen this before?

It's an extra seasoning added to your cook. Benefits are raging lung disease, lung nodules, and esophagus inflammation. Not to mention GI rupturing, and severe, explosive diarrhea.

I actually had a fresh bag of Weber that had some small areas on a few briquettes that looked like they white mold on them. Put those in the chimney...then cooked with hot coals. To me it looked like what molded was paper in the briquette? Not sure. But it was a brand new bag.

Odd b/c they come in plastic bags to prevent moisture.  But my guess is it is surface and when you light em, that stuff will burn off.  When the inside of my grill got mold in it, the heat took care of it pretty fast.

I like my Kettles like my coffee....strong and black.

It was only on the surface, and was a white mould which is good, If it had been any other colour I would have tossed the bag.

Thing is, I have never seen this with any other brand, even though they were as old if not older.

I wonder if the plastic bag holds moisture rather than letting the charcoal breathe.

It's been over a year and I don't recall what store this bag was bought at.

Then I'd only use it for initial fire up in a chimney, use after ash over - never added to a cook underway with food present.

Was the the mold fuzzy or a white powder?

Any chance this is leftover material used as a release from the briquette mold at the factory?

I think that trapping the moisture in the plastic bag makes the most sense.

Could have been? What I had on my Weber briquettes wasn't fuzzy. More powdered white. I have a few more bags. If I see it again I'll snap a pic.
