Cast iron heat deflector??
« on: April 22, 2018, 04:10:22 PM »
I heard a pop in my mini this morning. Turns out it was the clay pot thing i was using.

I have a spare cast iron skillet that will work size wise. I assume cast iron will fair better as a diffuser. I plan on chopping the handle off and using it.

Any reason that won’t work?  I would like a permanent solution and hoping this is it.

Just go to a thrift shop and pick up a stainless skillet. Much lighter than the cast iron and don't have to worry about rust build up and also easier to clean.

^Yup^

Don't ruin a cast iron pan for a heat shield, IMHO...
Multiple kettles and WSM's. I am not a collector, just a gatherer... and a sick bastard.

Not so much about ruining the cast iron pan. Stainless is a poor heat conductor so it's much suited as a heat shield in comparison to aluminum  or cast iron.

What I do is use a stainless bowl that fits, and wad up a few balls of aluminum foil and place in it. Then cover the bowl with a sheet of aluminum foil with a slight indent in it to catch the drips. Works like a charm... been doing it for years.

Thanks guys. I might have a stainless bowl that might make a good candidate.

Restaurant supply and sometimes  even costco sells  a variety of very wide shallow stainless bowl. Very cheap also.

So far the leading candidate is a stainless dog bowl out of what I have on hand lol. 3” tall and 10” wide. 12” would be better but it would definitely work. It’s stainless

I picked up an 11" comal at Ace for $10 and cut the handle off.  It worked wonderfully.

Wrap the broken clay pot thing in foil.

That's probably what I'll do.  It's the easiest of options.
