Performer Deluxe Propane Question
« on: February 07, 2018, 07:06:43 AM »
Weber recommends 5 minutes of using gas for lighting the charcoal on the Performer deluxe.

Could someone tell me how many minutes of use I will get or the number of lights I can get from a 1 lb bottle of Coleman Propane Tank that I purchased at Walmart.

Have any of you owners bought an adapter  to a 20 lbs tank? I was thinking about it, but I currently do not own a big tank, so I dont know if it is worth it.

Thanks!  Stephen

I don't know how many minutes you get but a 1lb propane tanks lasts me a while. I did it the Weber recommended way in the beginning but that soon became not as convenient depending on how I needed to arrange the coals (specifically if I wanted to use baskets). So then I switched to using a chimney with newspaper and using the gas-assist to light the newspaper lol That way I can pour the charcoal however I need.  That is particularly nice when it's freezing outside and you don't have to wait for the little stick lighters to catch the paper. Maybe just 1 to try it out and if it doesn't meet your needs then you can get the adapter to use larger tanks. If you do that let us know how many minutes you get! That would be really interesting to know. BTW Nice copper!!

I bought an adapter too but it is to adapt the 1lb bottle to the 20 lb tank. I refill the green tanks and they do last long if you just run them for 5 or so minutes at a time max. That's all you really need.

They last long enough that I don’t want to mess with a big tank attached to the grill.  I like goanywherejeep’s idea of refilling the small tanks from a large one if I could figure it out. I haven’t tried it.

I bought a SSP about 3 years ago and the guy sold it to me with a full 5lb tank which is years out of inspection.  It still has fuel in it.  Granted, I don't cook on the grill as much as most of you guys, but damn, the tank is making propane somehow.

I am just worried about getting it refilled when it runs out.  I hear the places won't do it if the tank is expired.  Anyone know what I would need to go through to get it certified again?

Just buy a new 5lb tank. It's a lot easier.

I use my grills on average about 8 times a week so i have a 5 and a 20lb tanks attached to my 2 workhorses.  Seldom move those 2 grills so having a big tank is ok. I use   a 1 lb tank on the other grills that gets infrequent duty.
Also refilling the small tank is fast and easy. Just keep track how many times you refill it to be on the safe side. I dispose it after 10 refills.

Just go to a propane company and have it certified. Keep in mind that it can cost you as much as $30. Certification last for 10 years.  One more thing about the 5lb tank is  that they are more pricey than the 20 lb tank, sometimes upward to  $60.

Thanks, Jules!  Good to know the process.  I am hoping it doesn't run out anytime soon, but fear it will.  It's been so long

I can get quite a few cooks out of the 1lb canisters.  For my space, another 20lb tank would be clunky and crowded.  I do have a 5lb can that came with the SSP I got.  I was able to get it recertified at the propane shop nearby for $5.  Since you just got it, try the 1lb tanks and see if you need to get a bigger tank.

FWIW, I use the propane start on my performers with a chimney.  No newspaper.  Just put the chimney over the flame then you can spread the coals how you want them.  Takes a couple minutes to light.

I have had a SSP for 16 years with the same 5lb tank...I only keep the gas on for a couple of minutes to get the charcoal going. ...5 lb tank lasts me about 2 years.  Now that I have another grill and rotate it (use lighter cubes for other grill) the tank lasts even longer.

How long do you leave the flame on while you have the chimney over it?
