anyone retrofit a performer to a 20lb tank adapter and if so what did you have to get to make it work?

Something like this will work fine.  https://www.amazon.com/Weber-6501-Adapter-Go-Anywhere-Grills/dp/B0012XXD4Y
but with that do I screw it into the existing regulator ? the whole reason behind it is because the peg that pushes the valve down as you screw in the mini tank is gone.

Then it sounds like you need a new regulator. I use the hose Greenweb posted just fine on my Performer.

Something like this should work.   https://www.amazon.com/Pressure-Propane-Regulator-Certified-Heater/dp/B00CHV8TV2/ref=sr_1_5?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1492121112&sr=1-5&keywords=propane+regulator

On second thought, not sure that fitting on the end is the right size.  Not a probably really as you can buy adapter fittings at HD or hardware store.  Still, nicer solution is to have the correct fitting already on the hose.
