Digital Pit Temp Devices
« on: November 17, 2015, 03:27:43 PM »
I'm looking to replace my Maverick knockoff "Ivation". Two failures in less than a year  >:(  It actually still works, but one of the probes bit the dust today. The wireless receiver loses signal quite easily too.

I do not want to use an oven "dial" thermometer for this application. Our vintage indoor oven had a problem and the service tech replaced the thermostat and informed me the "dial" thermometer I had in there was off by 30 degrees.

Right now, for less than $50, I could get a ThermoWorks "Dot" and a high temp air probe. I primarily use the digital stuff for low 'n slow cooking and want something affordable, accurate and reliable to measure the pit temp at grate level.

I am not in a hurry to get this and wanted to see if any of you have first hand experience with the Dot. Also, I am open to suggestions for other products.

I have a Maverick ET-733 and really like it - http://www.amazon.com/Maverick-ET-733-Wireless-Smoker-Thermometer/dp/B00FOCR4UI

I love my Thermapen from ThermoWorks but haven't tried any of their other products.

Jason is yours the 732 or just the  73

73 is junk.  732 is baller.
Imation is just a rebrand.

You'll always have to baby the probes

I've always had issues with probes, but I just buy a two pack and cycle them every 6 months. The Maverick is the easiest and most reliable, for the cheapest price point I've tried.

Yeah, i agree probes go pretty quick but <<<knocking on wood>>>the newest Longer cable higher heat hybrid probes maverick sent me as replacements for my Maverick 733 are by far the most resilient then the pair that came with the 733 or the probes that came with any of my other probe therms. I am more careful with probes these days as i've burned out a few sets.

I heard if you throw some silicone where the cord meets the probe, it will last longer.

Do you happen to have a link to the newest cables you mentioned in your post?

I had read several posts, from several different forums, that the Ivation product was just a rebrand of the Maverick...that's why I bought it (and it was only $40  ;D) The first failure was the receiver just stopped working, no power, nothin. It was replaced under warranty (I paid shipping  :() Now, after hearing from you guys, it sounds like the probes don't last forever...I can live with that.

I think I will get the replacement probes, that you guys posted the links to, and see if they work with the Ivation. If they don't work with the Ivation, I guess I'll get the real deal.

I love my 733. By user error I destroyed one probe but have never had any issues at all. I would highly recommend.

I have not used the Maverick, but I do have the ThermoWorks DOT. It is a quality product with probes that are supposed to be very durable. It is extremely simple to operate.
