Metal handle date question
« on: September 16, 2012, 07:38:02 PM »
There's a black metal handled 18 on my Thursday route and I was wondering how old it might be. The top handle is metal as well. The ash catcher is missing and the legs look like they have thumbscrews holding them on.

The side handles were metal on the older ones, the handle on top may have just rotted away...

It sits real close to the street and the top handle isn't the flat strap type you would bolt a wooden one too. It looks rounded on the edges.

How big is the grill?  22 or 18?

It's a 18, I'll try to take a pic Thursday when I go by. Has anybody got any good tips on the anonymous walk up and buy pitch.

I Has anybody got any good tips on the anonymous walk up and buy pitch.

My technique is a little direct.  Walk up to them and say "damn, you are lucky the town hasn't come by and condemned this place with that old rusty ass grill sitting there in plain sight.  Luckily for you I am on my way to the dump and if you give me $5 I will dispose of this eyesore for you."

If that doesn't work, and it probably won't, then go to plan B.  "I was just kidding, and my wife will kill me if I bring home another rusty old grill.  She says I collect way too much junk.  But I like old grills and I will give you $10 for that one."

To Troy's point, wood top handles appeared in at least 1964 as the '64 catalog says "all new walnut handle". Metal bowl handles stuck around through 1980 (B) kettles. All wood handled kettles made their debut for 1981 (C). Then first plastic ones came on for the SS Performer in 1990 (M) and wood ended with the 1999 (EE) kettles and all plastic came for the 2000 (DD) kettles. Hope this helps.

Nobody was home but I did get a pic but what I'm really kicking myself in the head for is not looking close at the vent for where it was made. The top handle is rounded metal, daisy wheel vents, and metal wheels. Thats heavy dew beading on the top in the pic. What do you think I should offer, haven't looked inside yet, other side is in the same shape.
