How much weight can the OTG grill handle?
« on: October 06, 2013, 11:47:58 AM »
I'd like to start messing around with some cast iron cookware on the 22.5" OTG.   Just wondering how the grill, or more importantly the tabs it rests on, will hold up to something like the typical Lodge skillet or dutch oven?

No problem with a 10" or 12" CI skillet, or a decent sized DU.

That is one of the best ways to use CI IMO.

Those spot welds are beefy. As long as your welds aren't rusted to hell I would have reservations loading up CI and meat on a OTG.

It should hold up without any issues at all.  :) :)

you could use cast iron grates and load up dutch ovens with meat and liquid and still not have problems

I use CI quite a bit on the 26 OTG. Here are two skillets - 15 and a 12 in at the same time.

But, I do like using either a performer or the RK due to the beefier support when really loading it up. Here is a CI Dutch oven, two racks of spares, and a mess of wings on the RK.

The craycort grates weight about 20 lbs and are made for the grill so it is not an issue at all.
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

I've piled a 12" CI skillet on top of the Craycorts with no problems whatsoever.  And put an 18# turkey on the conventional grates.  Those kettles are pretty solid.

Oh, and I forgot about my pizza cooks, which sometimes involve a total of 2 Weber grates, 4 fire bricks, two wire-style coal baskets, a pizza stone, plus a warming rack and another aluminum grate.  Plus a pizza.  It's the leaning pile of pizza gear, but it doesn't break the grate supports.
