Probably the only thing that was ever replaced on it.......also the only thing that might be plastic on the whole machine.....

The 1956 "Custom" crazed 22.5 with the modern lid had the red leg cap too. My guess is they were rubber in the 1950s before going plastic later.

Here are a few old ones at a demonstration 9one with a cools smoker roti attachment) and another old style lid on a new 26. The 26'r lids were taller and came with two handles with a top mounted vent.

I may be wrong, but regarding the 26er in the second photo... that lid looks exactly like a fireplace lid with a top vent added. Does that conflict with your account? I do know weber shares parts regularly, but I've never seen a 26 with that lid before, and it doesn't look right to me.

I think it is real too, but in order to be "more sure" (and never fully sure) I would really have to see it in person.  There is a reason things are not authenticated on the internet.

I added my $.02 at the Brethren. I thought it was a grill he was looking at buying and told him he should at least have a look.
I agree with you. I think it's the real deal too. If it's a knockoff, it was produced in the mid 1950s! In my mind there is no way to produce a modern day knockoff and have it look as authentic as that one looks, right down to the period wheels.
