Mesquite lump charcoal smells funny to me

I used some Mesquite lump charcoal the other day to bbq a couple pork tenderloins, and I can't say I enjoyed it. To me, it smelled like a combination of burning tires, road tar and an electrical fire.

The tenderloins came out fine, and the family said the bbq smelled good/fine, so it's got to be my nose.

I usually stick to oak/hardwood varieties of lump and maybe throw in a few hickory chips if I want smoke.

Anyone else experience anything like this?

Yes.   Mesquite is an acquired taste.

For those who are sensitive, the thought could've been much worse!

I find it interesting to look at old threads like this.  I only recognize one name in this one..... Wonder where everyone went?

I've never had a dislike for mesquite before, I've always been fine with it. Maybe there was something bad mixed in the charcoal.

I think I may have found the culprit. My shoe melted. Better than my foot, no doubt about it.
