Weber bowl corroded
« on: May 28, 2021, 02:31:17 PM »
Anyone else have this issue?   My one touch cleaning system on my Performer was getting hard to use and the “wings” were not making contact with the bowl and so I bought a new set and went to install.   I bought this in 2016 and use it probably 2-3 times a week.  The bottom was corroded to the point that when I went to remove the sweep it almost broke the whole attachment area off.   I took pics and submitted a warranty claim and they wanted to send me a new one touch cleaning system.  I need a new bottom bowl.  Just curious if anyone else had this issue???

Picture is taken from bottom looking up.  It is kept under cover after every use.

Wow. Never seen a bowl damaged like that. What are you cooking on that kettle?

Did you have a lot of grease and/or sitting at the bottom? I’m thinking high heat damaged the porcelain and then water/grease corroded the bowl.

Modern copper from 2016 I would call weber I bet they send you a new bowl at discount or free. I have seen them like that but those were 90s bowls in dirt or full of tree bits from bon fires.

I’m really pretty easy on my grill.  Usually have a Slow N Sear in there.  Have rarely had any grease or fat down in the bottom as I use the Drip n Griddle to catch drippings.  Never use it as a griddle.  Never used as fire pit.  I was really surprised when I saw that.  It’s been humid here in S. Texas but not THAT humid.

Water mixed with ash is the only thing I’ve seen rust a bowl out that quickly.

I have seen ash/water combo over time damage the bowl around the vents.  I've never seen crazing in that part of a bowl before, sans old kettles used as a fire pit.    Some high heat event(s) may have happened as even the ash sweep fastener looks warped.  But, I'd call in on the warranty for that one.  5 yrs in should not look like that, even with a high heat accident.

Just got the email that Weber is sending me a new bowl.   7-10 days.   Have to bust out the Old Smokey for a couple weeks to get by.

Wow! My 42 year old kettle looks brand new compared to these pictures. And my kettle has been used and abused, and neglected, up until lately. I can’t imagine that kind of damage.

Yes, there is no one who can beat Weber’s customer service. I have dealt with them on a couple occasions, and it has always been a pleasure.
