For whatever reason, the bend/curve on that bale does not seem as pronounced as it should be.  Maybe it is an imperfection in the length of the steel they used for bale itself?  I'm just spitballin.

I like my Kettles like my coffee....strong and black.

I might just do this with an old tea towel!

I have a old L code one touch plus that scratches easily.  When I use it, I just drape an old cotton shop rag over the metal bale, especially in the middle.

Interesting. That's the reverse of what the BILT instructions showed!

Maybe double check to make sure it is assembled correctly.  I installed a larger lid bale on a couple of mine and realized that I put the tabs backward.  Maybe you can share a side shot?

Could you please share a shot of a correctly-assembled new one? I got a 65188 for my SSP, but the instructions were for the old style. I'm still not sure how the tab is supposed to sit.

Tab goes down.  I initially had it pointed up which was backward.  Hopefully you can see this in the photo, had to find one and zoom in, so the quality is not the best.

Yes, this is from a 65188 larger bail kit.  The regular one is flat with a small lip.

Heh... I looked at a new Performer in a store today, and it had the tab pointing up.

Would a bail like that fit my 22" if Weber don't resolve the issue?

Should fit just fine.  I replaced two of mine and the lids now sit at a 45 degree angle to the bowl edge.  Great upgrade IMO.

Bob

My lids touch on the wire part of the bale, so I added 1/2" Flame Retardant PET expandable braided sleeving. Got it from Genuinedealz - a great place for 12 volt wire and accessories.

Mine scratched my lid the first time I used it. Upon inspection it was bowed in very slightly in the center portion. I was able to pull on it and create a larger gap and that solved the problem. I may still cover it with something to be safe.
