I just heard my tooth brush was made in China, and my lawnmower, and my tv, and my cell phone, and and and...unfortunately it's an impossible feat to go 100% USA, but I'd do it if possible, too. But this is Grill is a beauty and I'm all in!!!

One thing I noticed that I posted on Facebook as well.  My box which came from my local alliance dealer was retaped. When I opened it, it clearly had been opened before. The cardboard inner ears of the box had razor blade cuts across them which was not caused by me. My dealer did not open it. I went to Lowes and all 20+ of their boxes were retaped on the top. I wonder if the chips occurred when they went through customs maybe. I know the poor finish is another story. Perhaps the kettles are painted overseas, boxed up and shipped to the US where all of the accessories are added and reboxed.  Just a uneducated guess.

I'm sure it was customs.  My grill from Germany was opened and retaped.  Surprised they do that on such a large shipment with a company.  My sony tv was not repackaged among other things I have purchased in the past.

Merry Christmas to me.  Now, where to hide it.

I don't want to freak anyone out but that's a really bad sign, if retailers or a local Weber rep has been instructed to locally inspect product. As in, desperation to try and save a looming catastrophe.

There seems to be some speculation or confusion about where the finished product boxes actually ship from (Illinois or China? --- the box should indicate that, right?) but regardless, no retailer should ever be stocking opened product. Again, at that point, the country of origin is irrelevant. If this is a serious QC issue, it'll be doubly painful if many of these wind up being gifts.

The Baby Back Maniac video Troy posted on the WKC Facebook page shows Justin's new red with some flaws. Red paint chips aside, the image that worried me the most was what he showed of the grate straps: missing paint and rust?

That strap is going to rust through the side of the kettle faster than it should. Don't forget, the porcelain paint process also applies to the inside, not just the fancy outside.

Take care out there, folks.

The grate strap in the video bothered me the most too. Funny, because bbm seemed like that was the least of his worries.

An update, I talked to my friend, and the bowl was damaged as well. Weber CS is sending him a new grill.

Got my red LE from the Abt folks.  After all of the comments concerning condition of these grills I just opened mine up for inspection.  Both the lid and the bowl were perfect as far as I can tell. There were no chips, missed paint, etc. that I could see.
Just saying!!

I removed a bunch of nonsense and borderline racist stuff.

Lets keep this discussion about the grill.

C'mon folks. That is not necessary. We're better than that.

Thanks.
Some of us here are Chinese.

I also appreciate the thread cleanup, and I'm not Chinese.  ;)

Has anyone actually confirmed that this grill is made in China or anything otherwise different than previous grills?

And by "confirmed" what I'm looking for is something factual, not 'heard it"

Darko

I've contacted Weber. Still waiting for a response.

My thought was that the enamelling was done in China, but the rest of the assembly was done in Chicago.
