See what the excitement is about
« on: January 23, 2017, 01:28:54 PM »
Just got my vortex in today. My curiosity got the best of me with this gadget. People raving about wings and the sear on steaks led me to buy it. Trying it out tonight with wings and later this week ribeyes. I know this Rub is awesome and definitely has a kick to it.

Have you done wings with baskets in the center? Curious to hear what you have to say later.

Honestly my main reasoning behind getting it was for searing my steaks in cast iron. Got the 13 1/4 lodge few weeks back and the vortex is almost perfect fit under it. Thursday is steak night and will give it a go.

You'll love it! The skin on the wings comes out so crispy if they're left on long enough.
Looking for colored 18's and SJ's.

Pulled off naked and was done in 45 minutes.I used two Weber cubes and dumped lump in the vortex like you would a chimney. I marinated these over night in Italian dressing and hot sauce and was very surprised how crispy the skin still got. Used their wings Rub in the pic above and one big chunk of apple wood. This thing is worth the money. Can't wait to sear my steaks Thursday .

I'd take a few of those and a nice cold beer.

I could've pulled these earlier than I did. These cooked really quick and evenly. The char came from me searing them which I won't do again. From a taste standpoint, wings are just as good from baskets. Vortex seems to be a quicker cook and crisper skin. I'm very happy with the purchase and know this thing will be worth its wait in gold searing steaks.

I do 35-40 minutes.  Vents wide open.  Full chimney of kbb then top off the vortex with unlit and let them all get going.

Wings look great!

Indirect high heat chicken wings with a vortex or charcoal baskets are better than anything you get at a restaurant.  Nice work!
