A trunk full of reds
« on: September 18, 2016, 07:46:50 PM »
Hey guys, I had a pretty busy weekend driving 890 miles round trip to pick up these beauties.

Earlier this week, I saw this OfferUp posting simply titled "charcoal grill", sitting idle for 6 months.  Only problem, it was 400 miles away in Charlotte, I'm in Jacksonville.
Image was fuzzy but I could immediately tell it was an offset handle smokey joe.  Seller responded immediately to my $20 offer and we made plans to meet over the weekend.  Then I started to question my sanity... "Am I really gonna drive all that way just for a grill based on a blurry photo?!"  I couldn't believe this was for sale for 6 months and no local grillafellas showed any interest.  I was dubious.
As the weekend drew nearer I was still on the fence whether I'd actually make the drive, and out of curiosity I started poking around the local CL ads around Charlotte.  Then I saw a post in Hickory, NC with this picture.
I've been looking for a red 18" and my untrained eye thought it saw a red 22" and 18", but after inquiring, the seller informed me they were both 22".  I expressed interest and planned to meet.

I left the house Saturday morning at 7am, picked up the smokey joe in Charlotte around 1pm, the two reds and brownie in Hickory around 2pm and was back at home in Jacksonville at 9:30pm.  Not bad, totally worth it!

Well, I still haven't found the red 18" I've been looking for, but I think I did pretty good!

Oh and I heard it was national cheeseburger day, so I made brie-stuffed turkey burgers on my new red MBH
An action shot with the midget taking on chimney duty.
Thanks for looking.

The guy in Hickory used to be a member here, i think those reds have a bit of club history tied to them

The female seller mentioned her husband was a collector, and in the true grillfella spirit, she threw in a lot of extras.  I'll try to get some background info from her on these reds.
@wnc, do you happen to recall the member's screen name?  Long shot, I know.

Thanks, everyone!

I am undecided, it's definitely been used in the past.

The other red MBH I brought home needs a little love.  Not sure what year either of them are, but this one I believe is older.  The vent says patent pending.  There are quite a few chips in the porcelain enamel and the wooden handle is hanging on for dear life.  I'm undecided what I'll do with this one, but wanted to submit some pics to y'all before I put in some heavy elbow grease.

That's one heck of a trip.  Looks like you made it worth your efforts.  Looking forward to seeing your progress with these and seeing that offset handle all cleaned up!
