I have been using the long OXO tong for at least 4 years now and love it.  The only one I use.  As mentioned the long handle keeps your hands away from heat.  They have great rip control as well.  Pretty sure I just picked up mine separate at Bed Bath and Beyond.

This one from Amazon is surprisingly nice, especially given it's price.

Good length, solid and strong.   Have been using them going on 2 years now.

I have two that look like that one although it's a different (and no-name) brand found at Tuesday Morning, which always has ever-changing stock of stuff. Used for every cook.

I also can't do the sliding-lock dollar store kind. The lock is never where it needs to be for me, and there's no better way to unlock than to bump the end against your hip. Got my dad the Weber tongs, but they're not as long, and the spring is actually slightly too weak, which means it's possible to grab them and have them slip away.

@ReverendMike the weber tongs are strong but they have a lip so to speak which makes them not the best for some delicate moves.  I have a set of no name tongs with scalloped edges which are stronger than dollar store tongs and I use those for tricky tasks.  Try the weber tongs as a good baseline.

Interesting.  I have the older Weber Style tongs and they are scalloped without that edge.  Been using them for years and really like them.  Looks like they are still around on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Weber-Style-6441-Professional-Grade-Chefs/dp/B000WEIIQW

I have this style also and love them.  Mine came in a set of 3 with spatula.  They are strong and my favorites after that I like the dollar store ones also.  I got the limited edition red ones that they sale at ace for fathers day and the tongs are not very strong or feel cheap.

I've been using the same tongs for over 12 years.  It came as a generic set from Macy's when we were registering for our wedding.   The only thing problem after this long is one of the locks on the plastic carry case broke.  The set is still otherwise great!
I just recently got a new set from www.Grillaholics.com too.  I haven't used them yet but they look sturdy.  And I love their GrillMats. (on the gasser, haven't used it on charcoal)

totally off topic....but I just got an email from Grillaholics right after posting the above.

+1 for the OXO

I have 2 of the 12" versions of these at the link below. I use one exclusively for coal management and the other for food. I love the fact that they can lock and easily unlock from the top. They are sturdy with good grips as well.

Be mindful of what type of grill you have. The little hook holes like the OXO has won't work everywhere without a piece of leather shoe string first tied to it.

@addicted-to-smoke - Very true. For the dedicated charcoal tongs, I just sit them on top of the handle bar.

I've been using a set of Browne 16" tongs for around 16 yrs. Not locking, but I haven't replaced them yet.

Yeah that's the classic restaurant style that got copied by dollar stores and crappy grocery store brands until the reputation was damaged. Except that's the real deal there.

Here's another in that style with good reviews also: https://www.amazon.com/Adcraft-XHT-16-Extra-Stainless-Utility/dp/B004NG9FVM/ref=cm_cr_dp_asin_lnk

I like them, no fancy rubber inserts, just perfectly solid stainless steel. As I said, I've used and abused these for 16yrs and they're still going strong.

OXOs are awesome; I love mine.

But then last summer I was cooking with my chef Brother-in-Law and he revealed to me the wonder that is the Edlund tong.  As good as the OXO, but with perfectly scalloped teeth to gently nestle your food without pinching it.  I now have a pair of 16", with some 12" on the way.  My OXOs are mostly downgraded to charcoal duty.
One of the charcoal people.
