Did I buy a Weber?
« on: June 23, 2016, 04:18:59 PM »
I tried to drive past a garage sale today. It didn't work. I ended up stopping and buying an 18" grill for $8.

So many things about it looked like a Weber, but there isn't a mark on it. The seller had replaced the handles, the vent has nothing on it, and the wheels don't have the Weber ring. But it screams "Weber!" to me. Did my excitement cloud my judgement? I'm not sure.

Anyone have any insight on this one?

Sure looks like a Sears Econo-Kettle (made by Weber) that's in grate condition.  Nice grab for $8.00. Wrong ash pan though.

Obviously looking for a Glen Blue (who isn’t?😂).

Looking for anything Happy Cooker, including any re-branded as Montgomery Ward.  I’ve amassed a nice collection, but I’m missing a few still.  Let me know if you can help a fella out🤞

Interesting. The bowl shape looked off to me, but everything else lined up. The ash pan looked waaaay too nice to be the original, but I was too excited.

Was there an 18" Sears Economy Kettle? I can find the 22.5", but not an 18".

Either way, here's a few more clues...

The legs are aluminum.

And the lid has a hanging hook:

The tear drop shaped holes in the bottom don't look right either.
Still need a 22” yellow

Thanks for the reply! The tear drop holes are odd.

One more photo...then I'm done. Probably.

One of the leg sockets:

Personally, I don't know enough about econo kettles (Be it Walmart, Sears, etc)  to give an opinion...

But wow. I know I'm a Weber guy...But 8 bucks? I'd take it no matter what it was in that shape.

Kind of even cooler that it's a question on what it is!

Vents seem to be attached with nuts not rivets, also food grate seems to be supported by a ring impressed into the kettle.   I don't think its a Weber. So what it probably cooks just fine  8)

I had one of those … Sold it last year.  Had a crooked K on the lid vent, and L on the bowl vents.  Yours is in far better condition.

Based on the following thread, it was made by Weber for Sears.

That's definitely the same grill. :)

Does anyone know where I can find a round grill grate that is actually 18" in diameter? The grate that came with the grill looks to be for an actual Weber grill, which measures 17.5" in diameter and doesn't quite fit right.

Thank you to everyone for the replies. Even thought it's only a half-Weber, I am delighted to have found this grill. I'll tell myself that it's rare and special!  ;)

Yes, the original grate is just a tad larger than the standard grill grate for an 18" kettle.
The grate should fit rather snug just above the ridge in the bowl.

I would guess that it is the same size grate that would have been used for an 18" Outrider / SJ Platinum / Jumbo Joe (older style).

Based on my search, the part # is 70605.  Here is a link for the ereplaements site:

Weber may still have them in stock.  Maybe give them a call to compare prices.
