I'm doing a quick and dirty rehap on a $35USD SSP.


It is completely disassembled and getting painted this week.


I'm trying to not paint the visible bits, but to hit the typical rust areas.


I've tried to remove wire all loose rust and paint away.

Applied 1 rattle can of primer and 1 rattle can of paint.  2 coats of each.


Hopefully not to many runs.  If there are, I won't point them out.


We'll see how this goes.  Next time, I'll use regular Rustoleum.  Don't think I need the high heat.  There isn't rust close to the high heat parts of the frame.


The high heat paint recommends not priming.  I suspect I'm vulnerable to the primer failing withing the heat range of the paint.


Hopefully the BBQ paint will be a close match to the frame color.


I primed thinking that would be better protection against future rust.  Hopefully it stops any rust that is there now.

The frames are powdercoated. Rough up the surface for better adhesion. just sayin'

I know.  I didn't. Hoping it works ok.


I'm not painting the visible parts of the frame. Hopefully it will stick ok. If not, I'll try a different course on the next one.


Ultimately, if it beats back the rust for a bit and comes off the powder coated part, I'm not happy but ok with this.

Waxed the frame.

Polished and waxed the axel.

Any tips on how to coat or protect the axel?  I've polished and waxed it.

Black parts reassembled.  Really sturdy now.

Next up, painting and installing the castors and stainless and burner.

Put it in the chuck of my cordless drill and spun it in some 120 grit, then hit it with some Flitz. If I wanted it smoother, could work up to finer and finer grits.


It was pretty easy and quick.

Pretty close to done.  This is all assembled with SS fasteners.


Table polished and installed. 


Casters installed.


Gas assist installed. 


First cook tonight, pork belly.

Cleaned Lid/bowl.  Converted to SS "H" sweep.

I'm using all new SS fasteners.


The few hot parts that I do not have in SS have been seasoned with oil and heat.

Yes.  Did paint them black.  They didn't turn out the best, should've prepped or at least cleaned them before painting.  I just opened the package and masked and painted them.  They're fine if you don't look too close.

I have them on my main SSP and love them.  Will not have a Performer without them.  So much better than the Weber Casters.
