I think I read somewhere that the grate is stainless. Actually doesn't look like it would function that well as a regular grate unless you are using tongs. I think a spatula would get hung up on all the holes and level changes. Still not a bad system to have on hand for the right price.

I already had one of those grates and I mainly use it for stuff like hot wings. I just pull the center out and put my coals in the open hole, then put the hot wings all around. It actually works pretty good like that. It is nice and beefy too. The center part sits pretty flat in there if you use  the entire grill. But a spatula would kinda be a pain at times.

Plus you have a $50.0 cover. Was there a CI insert for the center section?

no, no insert. But I have one so no big deal. It didn't have the char baskets either, but again, no big deal, I have plenty of those and they are cheap anyways.
