New Wheels and a Side Table Restored

I've been working on both projects for a while and finally had time to get them both completed.

 The side table was found in Chicago about a year ago and Greg was nice enough to not only agent but he used his talents to help repair the laminate for me , thanks again Greg !
When I got the table was really greasy and the grease was deeply soaked into the laminate.

I used watered down simply green and dawn in a spray  bottle and repeatedly treated the areas over a few months letting it soak in . I would use a cloth and worked over the spots and you would visibly see the grease coming up. When the grease stopped coming out , it was time to sand. The teak laminate came right back to life with stunning stripes and really surprised me at how beautiful it was after several coats of teak oil. It's by know means perfect,  but I really like it.












I got the wheels on eBay , the tires were included and they were industrial blue and needed painted.

 

Original legs cleaned up beautifully and I salvaged all the old hardware and reused the hub caps as well as the thumbscrews.




Some great lighting brought out the spinning lines in the lid , note the large flat spot on top , so cool. You can feel the slight ridges and see the lid rash where one of those ridges is slightly higher.

I took it to a restorer and he mentioned bleaching , I thought that sounded to harsh not to mention it raises the grain and increases sanding , which in laminate there's only so much wood to work with. I opted to use less harsh detergents and would settle with the results , it worked pretty good but took time .

My table needs some work, as well. Not nearly as labor intensive as what yours needed, but some work just the same. That being said, and since

in laminate there's only so much wood to work with.

320 grit sandpaper and a focus on the heavier staining ( the end of the table closest to the kettle ) I didn't try and get all the stains 100 % removed , just cleaned up as best as possible. I hoped the teak oil would mask anything that was still visible and it did , you have to really look to find any spots.

That really came out amazing Dave - I can't believe you were able to soak out the grease stains like that. Are you sure you didn't just buy a second NiB table and are pulling a fast one on us?
