Picked up a Couple Kettles on the Way to Work Today
« on: June 25, 2015, 08:24:03 PM »
First is an early-to-mid 70s speckled black Smokey Joe with the offset handle.

and this looks to be a 1968 faded black MBH (Patent Pending vent and steel wheels)

I've seen dirty kettles before, but not with big flakes like this. At first I was worried they had done soem crazy hot cooks that comprimised the porcelain, but underneath the flakes the porcelain is clean and smooth. Wondering if they tried painting the inside for some reason and its flaking off. It's also on the inside of the lid.

Good stuff!
Offset Joes are just plain cool. Speckled ones are extra cool.

Fixing up the MBH will teach you a lot about the restoration process, and when you are done it will look awesome. I think that one is pretty special, being how it is one of the first kettles without thumbscrews, AND one of the last with metal wheels!

Those flakes are just the byproducts of a LOT of cooks!  I'm pretty sure it is just serious carbon buildup.  Both pretty sweet, for all of the reasons outlined above.

Wow....two very worthy additions to the collection right there. I have seen buildup that bad before.
