Charcoal grate on a 26
« on: May 22, 2015, 07:37:23 AM »
OK Weber support is ticking me off, I want to make sure I validate something before I tell them off.

They are resisting selling me a charcoal grate from a new 26er because it may not fit the old one "not available"

Can someone who has a newer 26 measure the grate and tell me what it is?

Can anyone think of a reason why a newer one would not fit the older model?  I have seen some of them with a reinforcement on the bottom instead of a flat grate.

Please let me know.

Thanks,
Jeff

If no one chimes in before I get home from work, I can measure mine and let you know. While I have not measured, they sure look about the same size to me.

i can measure for you after I get some coffee in me.

it's bigger than the old one though, and it doesn't fit perfectly on the straps if in an older grill.

The new 26 grates (both cooking and charcoal) sit higher up in the bowl.

I think they are all reinforced, also......could be wrong about that, but it seems the pics I've seen of new ones are & the old ones are for sure.....

Any idea what year they changed these?

It looks like 19 inch is the size I am looking for to have a perfect fit.

21.75  that is almost the size of  a  22 kettle grate.

@Troy are they all reinforced with the extra bars across the bottom?

Got to thinking about that......

The NEW style of 26" charcoal grate fits in the old 26" grills, but it doesn't sit on the tabs. It's relatively secure - not perfect, but it's not going to tip completely over or anything.

The new charcoal grate sits about 1.5 inches higher than the strap where it should sit.

And since this discussion has come up before, here is how the Craycort 26" cast iron sits. It also sits ABOVE the straps where the cooking grate should be.
It wedges in there and remains pretty stable. By no means perfect and it may move a little if you brush really hard. The craycort sits more stable than the standard new style of 26" cooking grate, likely because of the weight and shape of the edges.
Sorry no pics of new style cooking grate, it's burried in my garage of doom :(

Thanks Troy, seems like that would be really nice for searing.  I think I am going to go with this though.  Tell me if I am out to lunch.

18.5 in cooking grate with expanded steel on the outside rim.
