Performer Vortex Quick Run
« on: April 17, 2015, 07:22:06 PM »
Had a really quick run with the Vortex tonight.  Maiden voyage.

I filled it with some spent coal from prior cooks, and added some new K on top.  I added 2 small wood chunks - did not want to go grab another bag of KBB and they were handy.

Used the performer.  Gas assist for two minutes, turned it off and then 10 to come up to full burn.

Cubed some potatoes, tossed in oil and seasoned.

The jet engine was ready.  Added diced Jalapenos to the potatoes and put them on the grill.

Immediate thermo peg.

Cooking along.

When the potatoes were mostly cooked I added cheese and Bacon.

Done.

Plated with chopped southwest salad and Roasted Chicken:

the vortex is the angled ring of sheet metal visible between the grates. it's kind of a whiz bang deal that affects how things cook and actually delivers on its efficacy claims. you can check it out at http://www.owensbbq.com/vortex.html

here is a link to my first cook using a vortex    http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/bbq-food-pics/first-cook-wvortex/

edited to add- your guess of " it intensifys the heat" is correct when used narrow side up.

X2! I have been using it a lot on the 26'r. Seems like a perfect match for that larger kettle area. Funny thing is, when using it, it can also be pretty stingy on fuel use. I have not tested times, but can fill The Vortex with KBB, light either 1-2 Weber starter cubes, get it going good with open bottom vents, then adjust the bottom vents 1/4 open and get 400 or so for 2-3 hours. With folks coming and going at a party/dinner, its the ultimate KaBob tool IMO.
