If so, the date codes are clearly not the date of manufacture but rather more like model years on cars.

I have a 22 WSM with AT date code.

(Note to staff ... need to add that to the "Determine the age of weber grill" page.)
kettles, smokers...

Yes. AT=2013. The 2 character date codes, with A being in the year ending in 1 (DA=2001, AA=2011) and ending in D (DD=2000, AD=2010) spells out the word AUTHORIZED, or DAUTHORIZE if you go with '00/'10 as the first year of the decade. This has been the pattern, so far. As to how they choose the first letter (E for 1994-99, D for 2000-09, A for 2010-19) I have no idea except maybe they are spelling out "authorized" with the prefix letter. But they started with E when they went 2 character, so it would be "edauthoriz" if they go with that pattern. So with that logic, 2020's Weber's would be UD,UA, UU,UT and so on.. arriving at ID in 2070, ZD in 2080. That's of course assuming they don't change their date code patterns. Ok, i've beaten this dead horse, time to come back down to earth.  ;D. 2042 Weber kettles would be a HO!
