Cleaned up - EZ - Red Fade Jumbo Joe
« on: September 13, 2014, 08:35:29 PM »
Hi all,

Thought I would share some pics of the finished resto on my Red Fade JJ. Below are the original 2 pics from the CL ad. It was missing the vent dampers and corrosion had really taken hold on the legs, lid bale and all hardware. It took a few days of penetrating lubricant before I could even remove the original legs from the bowl. There is some decent rim rash but thankfully they hide quite well and the dome section of the lid is quite clean. IMO this is a pretty rare kettle so I decided to bite the bullet and replace all the metal hardware including legs, vent dampers, lid bale and clip assembly and new charcoal and cooking grates. As for the handle... believe it or not what you see below is the same handle just sanded down a bit.

Have a great weekend,

Six

Great job.  How did you get the rust off the legs or did you buy a new set?

you can hit that handle with a little minwax polyeurethane spray and it would jump back to life, and last a long time.  ;)

just make sure to let it dry over night before putting it back on the grill.

great restore!
I only use kettles with lid bales.

OMG What can I trade you for that beauty?  Perhaps my house?  I would offer you my first born child but I don't have any kids.  Perhaps my collection of Chelsea Ships Clocks? 8)

I'd love to hear the story behind this one as well.  Seems like red JJ acquisitions are usually full of adventure and intrigue...
