I've never seen this before...
« on: May 16, 2020, 11:43:52 AM »
A friend wanted to know some info on a red Weber he just gained possession of. Here is the damper/vent cap. Notice the "EE" stamp is backward. Has anyone else ever seen this before? If so, what is going on with it?

Kettles with incorrectly stamped date codes surface from time to time.  It has been discussed here on the Forum and the common thought is the lid vent was positioned incorrectly when it moved through the assembly line stamping machine. It causes the date code to be stamped  backwards or sometimes with the letter on it's side.   More so on J (1987) and K (1988) Codes for some reason. They are nicknamed Lazy J's and K's  as they are sometimes stamped looking like they are laying on their side.  Here's a backwards EE lid vent from a green MT I found a few years ago.  It resides with another WKC member now @varekai .

Thanks for the information. Would it increase collectable demand as it does in coin or stamp collecting?

Maybe for the novelty factor but I don't think it increases the value.

Another interesting, related phenomenon is mismatched bowls and lids.  I have an A code Smokey Joe kid paired with B bowl.   As I understand it, this must have been manufactured at the point between model years.

Purposely didn't buy one because of this. Instant regret

If you zoom in you'll see the inverted B on my father's. Backward B
