I think that might be my Grail grill.

Aw, man. That makes me feel bad for stealing it out from under ya.

No worries.  I was running around all weekend and didn't even catch that ad.  Actually, it's probably better that I didn't see it because my wife would flip out if another grill magically appeared on the patio.

Question 1: Cleaning wheels. I've never worked with these rubber tired steel wheels. I've read a soak in evapo-rust to remove the rust. Then repaint?

Do I soak the whole thing? It won't hurt the rubber?

Question 2: What's the correct axle cap? This thing has one metal cap and one black plastic.

Question 3: Any concern with using #0000 steel wool on the vents? That's been my practice on newer ones, but don't want to mess these up.

Question 4: The legs are loose in the sockets. What's the recommended method for getting them to stay tighter without doing anything irreversible?

Question 5: The charcoal grill is bowed a bit. Is there any point in trying to flatten it, or just let it be?

I recently found your kettle's twin (26 pat. pending copper most). Here are my non-professional findings.

1. I have the same question
2. I believe plastic. Mine came with 2 plastic caps and I have no reason to think that they are anything but original.
3. No concern there. I like to use painters tape on he kettle around the vents when cleaning vents. That way the porcelain is protected as you scrub/polish the aluminum.
4. If you insert something slightly smaller than the leg (like a broom stick or socket wrench) inside of it, you can slowly roll it around like you are stirring a drink and re-shape the legs so they fit tight.
5. I'd leave it. I think you risk popping welds if you mess with it too much.

Good luck.

Nice pickup on that steel wheeled Chief! The PAT PENDING era steel wheel kettles DID INDEED have the plastic hubcaps. The hubs were the first part to go plastic in '69.

Congrats!  I love that thick mist on it.  I have seen on some 22" with thin mist that just didn't  look right to me.
It looks to be in a great shape.  Brownie has always eluded me and they were 22".  I would settle for nice 18 or 22, but if I had a choice, it would be 26" for sure. Great Score!
