I'm thinking of building a kettle pizza attachment as they are to expensive to import to OZ
I need some dimensions from anyone who has one
What gauge or thickness is the SS they use?
What are the measurements of the opening at the front?
Here are some measurements ... not in metric.
I use it on my 22 OTS. This unit can convert for use on an 18, but, IMHO, I think it's best suited for a 22.
Not sure of the gauge. But, I can tell you it is somewhat flimsy. I'm glad I only paid $60 for mine.
I do love it for cooking pizza! Get one built ... you will not regret it. And summer is coming, right. Well, for you, anyway. ??? :P ;)

Thanks Mac
That's exactly what I needed
Feels like summer is here already, it was a pretty mild and dry winter, which means its going to be a hot dry summer
I'll report back on how I go with the build
Can I place my order now? Will it be ready for pickup on the weekend? :)

Can do, but it'll cost you a Blue GA :D
Good luck Hogsy. Would love to see pics when you're done.

Would you take my first born instead?
Ken
All the best with your build. A buddy of mine built one for his 18 OTG based on the measurements I gave him.
He uses it a lot. He sent me pics, but, I don't think I still have them. It shouldn't be too difficult.
I was gonna build one, then I stumbled upon the deal of the month (July 2013). :D :D ??? ??? ;) Couldn't pass it up. 8)
I went and talked to a fabricator today and he said I'm going to have to get the stainless rolled
Which means more $ in labour and the cost probably outweighs the point in doing it myself
Oh well back to the drawing board
I was thinking I could cut down a 44 gallon drum, but not sure how well it will fit
I'm also toying with importing the Weber Pizza attachment from the UK
It will work out about the same as buying the KP and getting it shipped
Which is better? The KP or the Britt one?
I was also looking at making one from a 44. I just need to pull my finger out and find someone with a plasma cutter.
Sent from another planet using Mental Telepathy.
You don't necessarily need to use SS for this.
I have used mine twice, and it don't look so pretty anymore ... and I don't care. :o
The drum idea might not be a bad one. Could make a few out of one drum. :D

Not sure
I like the look of the weber one and the coal setup looks pretty quick and easy
It also looks easier to load pizzas in as you can lift the lid
Downside is you can't reload more coals without taking the attachment off the kettle
I think they were only released this year so there's not a lot of reviews on them

Do you need to use a plasma cutter or could you just use an angle grinder?
Would all the paint need to be removed from the drum before use?

Yeah I'm thinking the drum would work well. You could even leave the bottom of the drum on so the heat radiates back down on to the top of the pizza. Same sort of idea as what Brian does with the griddle
Quote from: Hogsy on September 16, 2013, 12:28:11 PMDo you need to use a plasma cutter or could you just use an angle grinder?
An angle grinder would work fine. Just have extra / spare cutting wheels on hand.
Quote from: Hogsy on September 16, 2013, 12:28:11 PMWould all the paint need to be removed from the drum before use?
Yes. It would not be able handle the high temperatures.

Oh yeah! I like that idea!
I use another grate on the top part, foil and fire brick on it. Works good. :D
I just fabricated this on an old charcoal grate that I didn't want to toss.
Helps hold the charcoal to the back of the bowl. Welded some EM on to the grate.
I then foil the rest of the charcoal grate to help get airflow to the hot charcoal. :D

I'm contemplating it
It's going to cost the same as the KP del
Just can't find many reviews on it
But if its weber its gotta be good , right?
You'll be buying hogsy
Remember you bought that stick with weber scratched into it cause it said WEBER :P

Yeah and I love that stick
In fact I'd like a whole set of sticks but every time one pops up on Gumtree Kendoll beats me to it ;D
One day I'll get my set of sticks...... One day!
That made me laugh out loud! Thanks Joel.....and sorry. :(
You obviously have good taste! :)
Ken
Let's have a look at that stick. :D
Hogsy...it doesn't matter how many sticks I get on gumtree, you are the one with the yellow(s)!
Ken
No need to apologize Ken... But I will be riding your ass over it on Saturday :D
I would of loved to of seen JayCee riding on the bus with BBQ in tow
He's a Grillfella ! You need to get him onboard the WKC Train

So when is this 'build' going to begin? ???
Been to another Fabricator and he said the same thing- just buy the KP
Still looking for a drum , I picked one up a couple of days ago,got it home and it didn't fit the kettle
So I need to source another drum
Will keep you posted
What you do is buy some sheetmetal and mark and cut it with a jigsaw. Then bend it round to where it sits on the tabs and screw or rivet the back and add the bolts that that hold it up on the kettle. You can add the therm after.

Yeah I can handle that but the only sheet metal I've been able to find is Galvanised
Need to have a better look around when I get a day off
C'mon, dude .. get this thing built already! You have all the measurements .. Duke makes some very good suggestions.
Check out a wholesale metal establishment ... good prices, and they might even cut it for you.
Bend it around the drum you recently acquired ... then you're off to the races.
And, don't waste another day-off glued to gumtree ... J/k .. I know you Aussies can take a joke .. ;D ;D :o :o ;)
Ya can't rush these things Mac
Let me just say , the wheels are in motion.
Hey Hogsy, do you have a couple of kettle gassers, or is that Golly? ;D
I've been using my kettle gasser, with a 20" pan in the lid for heat reflection. The pizza sits in a pan on the grate during the cook.
Takes about 5-6 minutes per pie to cook.
Maybe just something to play with while you acquire parts 8)

I was just busting your b@lls, dude ... no worries! I know you have the Aussie meet up ...
Listen to some Hoodoo Gurus for me ... Man, they rocked in the '80s. One of my favourite Aussie bands. 8)
And shotgun a Swan lager, too .. ;D ;D ;)
Mac you can bust my balls anytime.... Did I just say that ::)
Swan lager... Now that is old school

Is the drum too big? Just cut it and find a weldor who will weld it back together with a little overlap. In fact I've got a Roti ring build in progress and that's what I'll do to fit it to a kettle. I plan to do the welding myself, having recently acquired a MIG welder. :D But I recently got a SS motorcycle muffler welded along with a cracked part for the sidestand bracket. When I dropped the parts off, he said it would be $35-40 but when I picked the stuff up, it was $20. :o I also asked him about pointers and he said to bring my equipment over one day and he'd show me what I need to know. (When I picked the parts I gave him some brisket and ribs and will likewise reward with something from the smoker when I come over for 'welding lessons.') Point is, if you find the right guy, you can probably get some welding done for not a lot.
If I couldn't do the welding, I'd probably overlap and drill and bolt the joint.
Any updates to this project, Hogsy?

How in the hell did I miss this? Has anyone used one of these? 4 minutes to cook, 15 minutes to get up to heat, 60 minutes of charcoal per firing.
I found this video a while ago. It may help in your quest to build a cheap pizza oven. http://youtu.be/VdWPUKibdeU. If the link doesn't work search "how to build a kettle pizza clone". Good luck

Was thinking of selling it and buying the pizza attachment sold in the UK but after cooking a few pies on it, I gotta say the kamado cooks an amazing pizza, in fact the best I've ever cooked so for now I'll be hanging on to it
Niceeeee. Are you doing high heat cooks on that kamado? I just joined the kamado klub today. :)
Congrats L, I saw the kamado you picked up in off topic
So far I've only cooked pizzas , so yeah high heat cooks
There's a bit of a learning curve with the kamado . They don't drive like a kettle

Hogsy, the internet guys say that these older kamados won't do high heat well and crack. Are you just ignoring that it do you have evidence otherwise?
I was blissfully unaware until you mentioned it
I haven't done a lot of research on the kamado but I thought it was more the firebox's (which are easily replaced) that cracked not the actual kamado
Got a link to what these internet guys have to say?
Idk the specific between each brand of kamado but this manual http://www.nakedwhiz.com/oldmanuals/showpp78.htm?I13 says don't run the p
Temp past 600F for a pachinko palace kamado. Ymmv for the imperial kamado or kinuurayaki kamado. The older ones were made of clay and aren't as reaistant to temp fluctuations as the more recent ceramic bbq's. I might be making a bigger deal of it than neccessary but it would be a shame for that nice cooker of yours to crack. Swamprb has done some nice kamado restorations in case you haven't seen it
Thanks L, I'll look into it a bit more
Funny that on the previous page it states 600f as the correct temp for cooking thin steak
http://www.nakedwhiz.com/oldmanuals/showpp78.htm?I11
Is it safe to say that you have abandoned the whole KettlePizza build?? ???
Nice pick-up, BTW. :)
Yeah Mac, it's on the back burner
I was waiting for Golly's mate to make one for me or for Golly to use his , but have given up on that too
I'm pretty happy with the way the pizzas are turning out on the Kamado
I drew up plans for my own kettle pizza and sent it over to my fabricator. He quoted me $100 for it. Tempting...

Get it done. Better price than the KP adaptor, and prolly won't be as flimsy. :) :)
I found this to be kinda cool. And affordable too.

If I could get someone to make me one for $100 .... I'd be on to it faster than Kendoll on a blue kettle on Gumtree !!!
I have to talk the boss into it. ;)
