I got my hands on the new SMOKE from Thermoworks.
It's their new wireless dual probe bbq thermometer coming out in a couple of weeks. It's available for preorder here (http://weberkettleclub.com/recommends/smoke/)
Sorry for the language in the video, I got pretty excited when I realized how nice this device is and I just couldn't contain myself :)

*ALSO - if you buy from that link, the club gets a small commission. The SMOKE was given to me in exchange for an honest review. My reactions and opinions are objective and 100% honest.
Fascinatining video. Interesting.
I already ordered this when it was announced, I'm sorry that I didn't know about the WKC link.
Looks good troy, thanks for the review. The look on my Girl's face if I brought home another thermometer, lol.
Great review I got excited listening to you get all excited ordering today

I'm pumped. Everything about that company screams quality. Definitely on my list.
The only thing I am curious about is the receiver display.. lanyard only!? I usually leave my maverick on the nightstand while I dream of BBQ. Not a deal breaker... but likely a v2 thing...

Well I don't have a thermometer, so this might have to do!!!!

Nice Video ! Very interested in this one.
I have 3 cheapo thermometers. One to check grill grate temp, instant read, and probe. I was looking into cheapo wireless one like Maverick ET-7, but this maybe way to go.
Shipping to Canada seems to be reasonable too at $14. Any Promo Code for this ?
Wow that thing looks amazing. Are the shiny metal pieces on the back of it magnets? Would be so nice to be able to stick it on the frame of my performer instead of having it sitting on the table taking up space.
@Troy - First, your review was funny and entertaining as always. I laughed out loud at the "I am going to buy another unit just to peel the screen sticker off" comment.
As for the unit itself, I have mixed feelings.
On the plus side, Thermoworks quality in a remote unit is a very positive thing. The promise of a WIFI module in the spring is also a very big plus.
On the negative side - I am so bummed about the unit's probes, mainly because I cannot reuse my substantial investment in K type probes from Thermoworks. But more importantly, it does not look like the probes that come with the unit can fit through the grommets that many of us use in our smokers. Can you please take a measurement when you get a moment?
Thanks,
Winz
I wish someone here would contact them and ask about a group buy. They already offer it @ $94.99 a piece including shipping for ordering 5 units.

This was my first thought as well! While I appreciate the spring reinforcements I can't see how those will fit through my WSM Grommets. Tricky enough to get a curved probe through to begin with at times. Wouldn't affect my kettles since I have them notched but I use temp probes WAY more on the WSM than my kettles.

Go the other way. Stick the plug thru the grommet from the other side.
Nice first look at this therm. Might have to get one. Thanks Troy

Right angle probe ends don't fit through the grommets I have. Can't remember the exact size but they're the larger ones from Cajun Bandit. 3/8" maybe?
Rats..!

Surprised me a bit as well.
It does stand up on its end (rocks around a bit) as well as on its side.
The receiver only has one button that serves as on/off as well as backlight. It's pretty simple to grab, tap the button, look at temps.
I'll cook something this week FO SHO

Thank you! That sticker was incredibly satisfying.
It does kinda suck about the probes not fitting. I haven't tested my grommets yet, but I'm pretty sure these probes won't fit.
Looks like it's time to upgrade the grommets
I like it. Purely for the bulky factor. Looks well made and would last.
Sounds like you should get a second job....peeling....stickers..off....products....

Good review, dude. Nice product.

I just looked at WSM grommet this morning and don't see why a probe won't fit thru the slit. It's silicone and stretches. Unless my grommet is somehow unique, The plug end should fit without and issue...I stuck a headphone plug thru which appears to be about the same size of the thermoworks. Maybe I'm missing something?

Great review
@Troy! This looks like another great product from Thermoworks. Only wish they had it last year when I ordered two DOTS to get meat and grate temperatures. The dots are an exceptional product as well but the remote temp reading is too nice of an option to ignore. Looks like the dots will be set aside for the new Smoke. Nice thing is that the dot probes should work with this so I will have plenty of backups.

While you're ordering he Smoke I'd recommend grabbing a couple of Pro-Series Needle probes for your DOTS. They read fast and the probe is so thin you won't feel like you're poking all the juices out of whatever you're cooking. I use needle probes all the time.

I have an older WSM with no silicone grommet. What I have done, like a lot of folks, is replaced the mounting hardware on one of the legs that hold the grates with a 3/8" brass gromet from Cajun Bandit.

There is no way to make those ends fit through. As is the 733 probes barely fit once one of the wires is already through the hole.
Ahhh. Makes sense now.

Yep, Same issue. I made my grommets for Wapiti out of hardware I found in the plumbing aisle of True Value

No way the probes for the new "Smoke" are going to fit through there. Looks like an opportunity for a new mod.....

This product looks great. I may have to get one of these. The lack of stand up receiver is a yuge oversight. I'd slap one of these or similar on it and call it a day.

Might work, but the bottom of the receiver is curved and the lanyard is attached there as well.
I missed the stand at first, but I've found myself relying more on the alarms with Smoke, and caring less about what the display says.
If I had my way though I'd probably nix the lanyard and add a stand.
@Troy - since the receiver only has one button... I gotta ask... Does the alarm only sound at the base station? Or is the receiver button on/off and alarm sleep/disable?
That would be a huge concern if the receiver doesn't have audible alarm.

both the receiver and the transmitter make the alarm sound
Based on the positives I read from
@Troy s review, I managed to receive a little Thermoworks care package today. This will make a nice little kit for some upcoming smoking sessions.

NICE!!!
I've been loving mine. Used it a few times with GREAT results.
I shot some more video too, but haven't gotten it edited yet
@Winz - Is that a package deal that Thermoworks sells, or did you buy the Smoke and Limited Edition Flame Thermapen separately, then make your own carrying case? That is badass.
Never mind, I just noticed the carrying case on the website.
Good review guys, thanks!
I'm leaning towards getting one but I have one question: is it possible to have it be silent?
I got a dog that freaks out when my thermometer's alarm goes off. I wound up taking my old one apart to disable the speaker.
Thanks

WNC - Yes, you can adjust the volume of the base unit alarm all the way down to silent. For the handheld unit, you cannot adjust volume, however, as soon as the alarm goes off, you just press the big button on the front and it stops beeping.
The thing I kept missing in all the reviews is that the units connect using RF, NOT BLUETOOTH!. As a result, the range is SO MUCH better. That feature alone sets it above other units in this price range.
In addition, Thermoworks will be releasing a WIFI module that will plug into the existing unit, and will allow you to monitor over the internet, making for unlimited monitoring range.
Good stuff,
Winz
Thanks Winz!

So what was the final consensus whether probe can fit thru grommet - either the probe or the plug end. Thank you - Ted

Didn't fit my cajun bandit grommets
Purchased probe and found it to be outstanding; used last week on large tri tip with mini WSM. Question was asked about size of grommet required. The outside diameter of probe collar is 3/8 inch. Did not work with Cajun Bandit 3/8 grommets because the inside diameter of the grommet is .315 inches; not .375 inches. Now using 3/4 in. x 1/2 in. brass MIP xFIP Hex bushing with nut. Removed 3/8 grommet and enlarged hole with step drill. I have found three solutions for high temp silicone grommot upgrades for older WSMs and any Weber kettle. High temperature rated grommets for Weber Smokey Mountains, kettles, and stacker conversions with 1/16 inch panel thickness are: Weber 85037 Grommet which requires a 1 1/4 inch cut hole; Mil Spec 5 Grommet, Silicone, 3MRT1 which requires a 13/16 inch cut hole; or Mil Spec 5 Grommet, Silicone, 3MRR9 Grommet which requires an 11/16 inch cut hole. I highly recommend the use of a high speed steel step-drill and lube for cutting the hole; excellent USA made on eBay. The 3MRR9 grommet is the lowest cost option since you will be getting a package of five and it has the smallest drilled hole with 7/16 center hole for inserting your probes. The next recommendation is the 3MRT1 grommets (pkg of 5) and has a 1/2 inch center hole for inserting probes. All items can be found on eBay.
Welcome,
@Bob the Bear. Glad to have another bear around.
