Title: My first local "Vintage'' find.
Post by: firedude5015 on October 25, 2015, 12:15:40 PM
Ok, not a Wood dale, or a cool color, but kettle finds around here are RARE.
1983 E code in great shape. All handles intact, one touch system will clean up as will thw rest of the kettle. All in all I'm a happy camper!(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/25/2991fb1ef640d9a31c250d4450d4c9da.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/25/cebc08b3a754c6ed8d80766dee61c1e0.jpg)(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/25/1d7a0292e1959f8e01b2404edc22dd3b.jpg)

Yes whitewalls are in perfect shape.  Original owner, purchased brand new. Even got a full bag of KBB and a bottle of lighter fluid  (hehe). He bought an Egg and sold the kettle, poor soul. I probably paid too much but down here the market is scarce.  $50 was a deal for me. Clean up starts Tuesday!

Ok, need some opinions, IF I converted this to a "Gold" in a way thay could easily reversed,  would that be bad?

The Ash ring snaps on and off easily (as long as the slots line up on the leg sockets) and is reversible.

First, that is a nice kettle. And $50 or twice that shouldn't be a number you are embarrassed about. Not every area in the country is going to have folks willing to sell these things for small amounts of money. And if you went and bought a new one...it wouldn't cook any better.

I had four bullets, but I typed them out, then deleted the last three. That kettle is all yours and it is a beauty. Set it up just like you want to

Excellent buy! I would have paid that in a heartbeat. She is a lady! That vintage ash catcher is rare! I wouldn't change it. Adds character! Hope it cleans up nicely for you. If you are worried about  falling ashes blowing out of it, a twelve inch aluminum pie pan sets on top of the one touch cleaning vanes and doesn't block air flow because there is space between it and the kettle bottom. it will catch the falling ashes from two char baskets placed together in the center of the charcoal grate. Sear in the middle of the cooking grate and move to the edges for safe zone. My 2000 kettle had its cleaning vanes rusted beyond service. Could not get set screw loose and had to cut it loose. The new style  worked good for me. I like new cooking grates. She is worth that for sure. Treat her right and she will never leave you!

Got to work on the handles and get the kettle cleaned up a little bit tonight. Gotta get the legs and triangle looking good, ran out of daylight. Original ash sweep is cleaned and re-installed. I do think I'm gonna love this kettle!(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/26/bf67c45de5e97286c779a5454703247c.jpg)
And in the spirit of the season....

The handle looks to be in really good shape as it sits.  What are you looking to do to it?

Already did it...cleaned them with steel wool and applied 2 coats of satin poly. The wording was pretty faded on the original lid handle so i put it on the back of the bowl and used the one from there on the lid.

That is one AWESOME black!! One of the few '83's that still have the "One The Only" handles on them. By the end of that year the handles were changed to just say Weber and the two lines/bars. That is badass!!

Did it break your bank? I'm sure it didn't, so $50 is not a bad deal. The ash pan & good wheels are worth the price of admission alone. Have fun cleaning her up. I would have to imagine the market sucks being so close to the Gulf. I take it for granted, living in the Weber laden Midwest.

Finally got it cleaned up. Couple rough spots on triangle and I'm gonna soak the grates, but it's all original and pretty cool!(http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/10/31/9825144802c6aa7597824c9d0423da44.jpg)
